Hi all, any ideas what the spare wire is for? The one with the male end which isnt connect to the coil. Car runs fine. Cheers M

Sorry can't say. But what I'd do is put a volt meter across it and earth. Check there is nothing with ignition off. Then see what voltage u get with with ignition on and what voltage u get when cranking the engine. Then do same test on the positive feed that is connected to coil. Post the results
First suspicion of mine is that u might find the disconnnected one provides 12v only on cranking (nothing with just ignition on) and you may find the feed that is connect to the coil is 12v with ignition on (and crankin). I.e. The connected feed is 12v all the time. In that case someone has removed the ballast resitor and the cranking only feed is deliboratly connected, looks link a lumination coil and some of those are 12v coils. Just a hunch, voltage results will help...

It looks as though you have a spare pair of free wires sharing a male connector. The pair on the coil I suspect share a female one, and are fitted to the +ve . The original coils had male and female terminals so that they couldn't be wired up incorrectly. The -ve side of the coil would have had one wire to the distributor, and the other to the rev. counter. If everything is working, then there must have been a bit of re-wiring somewhere, which might be worth investigating. In any case, I think it would be wise to insulate the end for the time being.
Mike.
