juddering from clutch?

Morning all.

Got some juddering when manoeuvring the car slowly - ie reversing it out of the garage and positioning. Going through all the old bits i inherited from my dad, there is a clutch cylinder repair kit. Is it reasonably safe to assume this is the cause of the problem?

Sorry to be a pessimist, but it won't be that. Do you mean that the pedal moves up and down in a series of jerks, or that the clutch engages unevenly?

Hiya,

For a quick test try to operate the clutch with the engine off, if the travel is smooth than it isn't the slave cylinder, but as Mike says, that I san unlikely culprit. It is generally caused by a build up of dust on the sliding parts of the clutch so clutch plate splines to gearbox input shaft interface and the clutch bearing carrier on the gearbox nose. The only cure I'm afraid is going to involve removing the gearbox. If it isn't too bad, I'd live with it. Enjoy the car for the summer and consider it for a winter job.

It may be oil on the clutch, any oil leaking out of the bell housing ?

Thanks for the replies. its just as you engage the clutch. If you are moving very slowly, there is a 'juddering' as it engages. It is only when engaging very slowly. I think the travel is smooth (with the engine off), it's chucking it down here at the moment, so i'll try that later on.
I don't think there is any oil leaking out of the bell housing, but i'll check. From memory, the only drop of oil seem to be on the oil filter
