Protection of cylinders while head off

As the title says, whats the best option of protecting the cylinders from rusting while the heads are off ... a thin coating of vaseline perhaps ?

Depends how long you propose to have the heads off, if we are talking 3-4 weeks a good smear of engine oil around each bore will last a good while and also nick the missus's cling film and stretch it over each block surface for the head after smearing engine oil on that also.
If you are into longer term 3-4 months I think the Vaseline would come into it's own with better surface retention especially on the verticals.

Yep .. its going to be for a while .. so I think the vaseline is the way to go, thanks for the input. I guess it wouldn't hurt to place the cams in a tub of engine oil to keep those protected too

Some desiccant crystals in the block would not go amiss, then wrap the whole block in a poly bag and seal it.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.
