Hi,has anyone had any joy at getting their masak grill rechromed ?,had a few quotes but after viewing the photos I've sent all have said can't guarantee getting rid of all the pit marks.Dont want to spend £ssss and not be happy with the grill.Anyone got a good recommendation for a person/ firm who they would trust. Cheers

I have seen some done, but it wasn't possible to do the bits between the grille bars. These were smoothed down and painted black, which looked OK.
SOCTFL did look into this a few years ago. ISTR that enquiries were made about getting them remanufactured in brass which would chrome properly, but it came to nought.Dave

which is. The refinishers can fill in holes and craters which you can see and rechrome and the chroming process then finds other doubtful areas and exposes MORE holes and craters. The problem is the base material ( a zinc alloy mix)is only suitable for a single chrome coat when it was first done, as pointed out a brass grill will chrome nicely and will also rechrome if the finish degrades (unlikely cos it's on...brass) in about 20 years time.

This part is probably made from the same material as the exterior door handles. If that's the case, then a good job should be able to be made in the same manner as when I restored my door handles. The process was as follows;
1. Strip off chrome finish (the plating shop that will plate the part can do this).
2. Rub down the surface usinig fine grade emery cloth to reveal any pits and holes in the mazak.
3. Fill the various pits and holes with a suitable filler (I used Aradlite for the holes and knifing putty for the pits), rub down until your happy with the finish.
4. Spray the part with several coats of etch primer - finish with scoth brite before handing over to the plating shop - I used Silvabronz in Alton Hants).
5. The plating shop will now go through their process, which I believe starts with a coating of silver, which is chemically applied giving a conductive surface for the rest of the process.
The finished part should look as good as new and hopefully will last.I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!

It is on the list of projects to revisit by SOCTFL but I doubt the final product will be in brass, or any other metal. As it is a fit/form part (no function) we are looking at various plastic technologies. No timelines yet but IIRC we are trying to get the CAD drawing finalised at the moment

Work has (re) commenced on reproducing the air intake.
It isn't at the top of the list but isn't far off.
Regarding the chrome vinyl wrap suggestion.
I wasn't able to find anyone able to do the door handles as a wrap / repair.
Please try it out or find some one willing to try then post some pictures of the results with costs if possible.Last edited by jbuckl; 7 July 2017, 14:33.

Tying onto this from another forum try this report of Mazak welding by a firm for a member on the TR Register, he's done a great job and maybe could be used for grill repairs.
Everyone knows that MAZAK is poor stuff and hard to fix. Anyway I had this, its a somewhat rare DR1 motor, from an early Jaguar. Didnt look like this when I got it of course. I got it cheap because of this: This is the result of using the MAZAK casting as a spanner, when undoing the wire-rack nut...
