ebay towbar warning

There are often used towbars advertised on ebay but it's wise to make sure it's complete.

This one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-st...3D263062585219 is missing the cross-bar that takes the loads into the rear bumper supports and if anyone tries to use it they will pull the towbar off the boot floor and lose their trailer or caravan. I asked the vendor if he had the cross-member and he replied to say the illustrated parts are all he has.

Scary thought putting a towbar onto either a boot floor or rear panel, looking at them I wouldn't have thought either or both together they would be up to the job long term. Certainly my boot floor before recent remedial work would have been useless.

The correct fitting for a towbar is to pick up on the rear bumper fitting points below the rear light panel, and use the boot floor as a stiffener.
The rear bumper mouts are coupled into the unitary body construction and have adequate strength to tow a suitably sized trailer. I once had a rear end shunt from a Vauxhall which wrecked the front of the attacking car but made no visible damage to mine.

I've had a tow bar for years and it is as mole says, properly fitted with a crosss bar between the bumper mounts. it adds strength to the back and apart from being useful for towing a trailer (used mine for boys go kart trailer many times) it makes a perfect jacking point.
