I hate electrics....help please?

I've just pulled the stag out of its garage, started fine after a couple of weeks away. When closing the garage door, i noticed the attached on the floor right under where the engine bay was sitting. I cannot be sure its from my car, as there are other garages around, but on the basis I didn't notice before i pulled the car out and did when I put it away I am fairly sure! My problem is I don't really like electrics and am not sure what it is or where it might come from - any ideas out there? I am hoping its an easy fix......

As a matter of interest, theoretically, what would happen if i didn't put it back (long or short term), as the car appeared to start and run fine without it, albeit for only a few minutes?

Looks like the radio interference condensor that goes on top of the coil to me.

This looks like a capacitor (or some call it a condenser), its job is usually to suppress high frequency interference and is commonally found in the distributor where its fitted to suppress the elctrical 'noise' caused by the opening and closing of the points. If this was doing that job before it fell off, then it may cause the points to prematurely wear and you may start getting misfires, however if you have an elctronic ignition fitted this capacitor may be left off.
If it did fall off your car then one possible place would have been on the points side of the ignition coil so fitting it back on the coil would be the best option, make sure the metal tab is secure to the metalwork of the car body.
