    Front right wheel grinding noise

    Hi All

Has anyone experienced a grinding noise from the front wheels which in this case ceases when turning left but is verable in a straight line or turning right.

I cannot use the car at the moment for fear of damaging something.

I have removed the break pads and inspected and these seem fine, no stones. The dust shield has been inspected for stone wedge or deformed and seems ok, however when rotating the noise Increases the grinding noise. when i move the wheel from extreme stearing throws the grind deminishes or even stops for sometime.

The grind is not constant during a complete revolution but picks up for about 1/2 a turn.

What should I do to identify and possible fix this problem.

Wheel bearing? I know it's usually a rumbling noise rather than grinding, but worth checking.

That's my next look tomorrow, but before all the dismantling I thought I'd ask.

Also if I were to have to replace discs (even though they are practically new (100-400 miles I'm guessing) should I go vented with upgraded calipers. If so anyone got any preferences to make?

check front wheel bearing for play, you say newish discs, have you checked them for runout?

re upgrades depends what you are doing with it? I find standard disc and drum setup works just right for me.

Ensure yours is in fine fettle before venturing off piste

Further inspection of the hub and disk.

Had to put further investigation on hold for a couple of weeks due to work commitments but I've had a look today

Any help on this will be much appreciated as I don't have a lot of time, the joys of being self employed.

            Problem as I see it.

Front right hub assembly moves when under load causing the disk to effectively wobble and cause a grinding noise.

            What checked:

Brake pads out and no stones etc pads are new less that a 1000 miles as are the discs.

Rotate the disk and there seems to be a high spot that touches the dust guard, I subsequently bent this away from disc but the break pads still tighten at this point giving the grinding noise when re fitted.

This time turned the hub by hand checking rotation as I went from full lock to full lock. The grinding comes and goes eg move hub 45deg and grinding goes, pull back grinding returned, push 80 deg grinding comes and goes and is not consistent. Full lock goes sometimes but stays other times.

I'm putting my money on hub bearing either loose of failing, the latter if so means the previous owner has not installed it correctlly. (Not surprised as quite a lot on the car needs redoing)

So before I get up early tomorrow and start pulling it apart, has anyone got anything else they suggest I check.

I'm now desperate to get out in the car and do some shows meet up with local club but I can't while the wheel is making more noise than the exhaust at low reves.

Try tightening the stub axle nut up so that all play is removed from the bearings but will still allow the disc and wheel to turn - any noise ?

Is the suspension coil spring broken?

Well spent the day working upon the hub and solved the problem.

I tightened the castle nut and slacked off. But on the assembly of the pad I noticed something I haddent seen before. The lugs of the pads were not level, that can't be right? So I looked on the off side and it was the same there. Removed the pads and realised that the pairs were not matching see photo.

Removed and refitted, job done, no more grinding noise. However I'm not sure whic solved the problem.

Anyway we went to the pub to celebrate. Fantastic drive....
