Radiator bottom hose catching on alternator

I fitted some new hoses a few months ago and now the bottom hose clip is catching on the alternator fins and making an almighty racket and obviously not drive-able. I checked the set up with a another local Stag (thnx Maurice) and it looks like the hose needs to be shorter at the rad connection to pull the catching connection away from the alternator. So my questions.......

Is the bottom hose designed to fit one way only or does everyone have to slice a few mm's off ?
I cannot see anyway to move the alternator back, is that correct ?
Is there any adjustment I can make to the metal pipe the bottom hose attaches to ?

I'm in the process of removing the bottom hose now and draining the system (going to run a flush through it) but I'm finding removing the bottom hose really, really difficult because of access - how do the professionals do it ?

Google "Stag bottom radiator hose connection" and it will show you drawings of all the parts involved.
Small bracket 157221 (in drawing) helps keep the pipe away from alternator blade etc - have you got this, and if you have is it in exactly the right place, may need a washer or two.

it is a tricky area....i always find it irritating to remove... i use a wide screwdriver on the edge of the hose and lever it off and basically its easier to get back on. This is all done from below so get ready for some to run down your arm.

        Hi Scotty,

I had to cut the new bottom hose I bought when I fitted it having turned the engine over to hear an almighty clattering and not realising at first what was happening. You may want to ensure that the jubilee clip nut is turned away from the alternator. Better still, move the alternator to the top of the engine on the opposite side, it will make access easier, reduce the risk of water ingress to the alternator in heavy rain and illiminate the hose issue.

I have this problem now fitting new hoses.
The hose looks like it needs to be shortened.
You cannot move the alternator back becuase the belt would not line up with the crankshaft pulley.
I am going to Google what Tdm said and have a look.

Fully drained with bottom hose off and yes, got the wet arm. I have the metal pipe bracket but removed it to reshape as it was not tight enough on the pipe. I will refit tomorrow as I'm flushing the system and the bottom hose will be on and off a few times. Having had a trial fit it's clear you need to trim off some rubber but I will be loose fitting everything to see how it goes. I'll report back tomorrow. It's not difficult - just fiddly and tough on the knuckles. Moving the alternator sounds like a good modification to think about.

I had the same problem. The alternator actually cut the hose. My advice for what its worth....just cut the hose off. Saves hours of pain and frustration for me any way. To fit....fit the bottom hose to the stainless pipe with clip loosely. Fit the hose clip to the rad end bottom hose so it can be tightened up from underneath. Make sure the bracket for the stainless hose is fitted. It helps if there is another set of hands. Push the stainless pipe down as hard as you can then tighten the stainless pipe clamp at the same time. I put a a 10 thou feeler gauge between the pipe and the alternator pully. Simples...not really. Took about 3 hours of trial and error. Better still get somebody else to do it

If I remember rightly I cut 10mm off, so the hose moved away from the alternator fan and repositioned the clip tightening bit.

Climbing the steep hill by Exeter racecourse in a heavily loaded car on our way to Plymouth to catch the Ferry to Spain was when mine burst, but fortunately the called out breakdown man was able to fit a new one for me in about half an hour (luckily I had a boot full of spares as I was Emigrating, including a spare bottom hose). Bought another one to replace the spare when we got to Plymouth.

Likewise. Just as well really as my new alternator packed up after a couple of months. Changing it was a 5 minute job.

Any special parts required to move alternator? Will the wiring reach and what belt is used? cheers Mark

You need to modify the wiring to reach but not that difficult, you can go behind the engine or across the anti roll bar. You need a bracket which someone posted a drawing for some time ago. Not difficult or expensive to have fabricated. Try a search to see what turns up. I've got the drawing somewhere if you can't find it.

Edit: here's the thread with the bracket drawing
