Hi All
I have been trying to improve my heavy thumps engaging N to D and N to R, a fairly common problem by the number of posts. I followed up a suggestion from one post suggesting a blocked auto box breather might be the problem. Mine appeared OK at first glance but I had a length of stiff plastic cord, about 2mm diameter, so I pushed that down the breather pipe. It stuck about half way down. On checking, the breather is secured to the filler tube by an early version of a cable tie, I think mine was original. The rubber pipe at that point had softened allowing the tie to compress it against the tube and effectively blocking it. I guess fluid drips have run down the tube over the years gathering at the point of the cable tie. I snipped off the old tie, re-shaped the rubber breather pipe at that point and re-secured with a wider cable tie a bit higher up. This did not cure the heavy thumps problem but did help low revs performance a bit where I had experienced some lumpiness and apparent delays dropping from 2nd to first on corners or slowing to stop. For the sake of a quick snip and a cable tie this must be worth a look for auto cars that have had their breather pipes untouched for a long time. I will replace my breather pipe when next ordering bits. One word of warning. I got a bit over enthusiastic and pulled the breather off the gearbox end. Had to crawl around looking for where the connection was located before pushing it back on. Hope this helps someone.
