uneven tyre wear

Hi, at the MOT on thursday, no advisories but the tester mentioned the n/s front tyre was wearing on the outside and the o/s front was wearing on the inside. I thought if the tracking was incorrect then both would wear on the same side, ie both outside edges or both inside edges. the car seems to pull to the left some times, any thoughts please? thanks in advance, Derek

Do you often use hard right lock when travelling at relatively slow speeds e.g. parking? If you look at the angle the tyres take and deform on full lock it's easy to see how the edges of the tyres can be scrubbed away.

I would get the rear wheel alignment checked. If there's a problem there you could end up with the car crabbing along and wanting to go left which means you're steering to the right and scrubbing the front tyres as you describe.

Thanks for the replies, I think I can discount the parking answer, its not something I do a lot, I will get the wheel alignment checked, I intend to rebuild the front suspension and that will be a good reason to have it all checked. Thanks again, Derek

The steering rack might not have been centred correctly. Check that the number of threads exposed on both track rods are the same. If not it can scrub the tyres on cornering even if the tracking is correct in the straight ahead position.

Thanks for the replies, have checked the rack, 6 threads on one side 5 on the other, so I assume that is ok. the car does wander slightly on dual carriageways, I have put this down to the 1/2" of play at the steering wheel rim. no slack in the u/js on the shaft so it must be in the rack, doesn`t bother the MOT tester. derek
