    Carpet in the garage...or not?

I have just 'laid' an old fitted carpet in my garage and it fits rather well. But just as I thought what a good idea, I then had second thoughts. Will it dry out or stay wet and moldy, and is that worse than just a plain old concrete floor? I'm not planning on heating it, nor do I intend to only use my car in the dry. I know this isn't right up there in terms of Stag forum challenges, but I would be interested in other views re the pros and cons.

Hi Paul I used carpet on the walls to protect the doors, and carpet tiles on the floor, the ones with the hard plastic? back. as you can replace if necessary if you get a spill.

its good to have a small bit of carpet to neal on,but i wouldn't have carpet over the whole floor it holds water and damp,i would either lay rubber mat or a thick lino, easier to clean up oil spill's, and also keeps out the cold when laying on your back under the car

Depends on your garage, if it's an attached garage with a dry environment then the aforementioned carpet tiles are nice and warm to work on.
However if it's a detached garage or one with a cold floor which attracts condensation when covered then the rubber or PVC tiles about 5mm thick may be your choice. They don't object to condensation behind them and if oil is dropped can be lifted easily from their interlocking mesh the floor cleaned and the cleaned tile dropped back in place, not so easy with a carpet tile.

Both my Stag and my other classic have micro drips at a number of locations. The BW65 in my Stag seems to behave itself whereas the BW35 on my other classic does the characteristic fluid dump.

I collect cardboard from large boxes and packing from friends and neighbours* and use this to "carpet" my garage floor. Provides good working surface also. I replace it approx every 12 months

Generally older garages don't have a damp proof membrane, and even some newer ones don't, this means damp will rise through the concrete and start to rot the carpet from the back .. only one way to find out though and thats to try it out, you could put a vapor barrier down first though and this will stop rot from under the carpet, something like this http://www.diy.com/departments/ndc-g...r/35633_BQ.prd , overlap well and tape up any joins.

As for water dripping off the car from the top after it has been out in the rain, it depends how well ventilated your garage is as to how well the carpet will dry out.

Yep, TR2 Lockheed axle at the bottom and a TR4 Girling axle on the top, I have to get my "game" face on to "snatch" the top axle up there in one, lol.

Thanks guys, useful insights as usual from on here. My garage is fairly new and attached, so I'll try out the carpet this winter and see how it goes. The cardboard tip on top, in key drip places, is a good one. Thanks

                      Paul,
I also have had carpet tiles (rubber-backed) in my integral garage for 5 or 6 years with no problems. Of course I have a drip tray under the auto gearbox!
I also have a large de-humidifier and 2 electric heaters providing background warmth.
I monitor temperature and humidity to ensure the perfect environment for my precious toys.
                      Regards, John.

The family I purchased my house from used the double garage as a games room and had the walls plastered & painted plus a very nice engineered wood floor fitted!

The Stag looks very nice parked in its little showroom! :-)

You should see how much cardboard you get to put on the floor after buying an 80 inch TV!!

Cardboard for mine where ths Stag sits - the last from the box containing new patio furniture which we probably shouldn't have wasted money on for this summer (or lack of it)!
