    Clutch bearing clearance

I'm sure I am not the only one with this but I would really like to get the bearing off the face of the pressure plate when in idle to cut out hearing the gearbox idle turning. The bearing is fine but the car is much quieter when depressing the clutch pedal and surely its not good for the bearing to be spinning against the plate when in idle.

On the early TR's there was a spring that pulled the clutch fork back towards the slave cylinder which in turn lift the bearing off the pressure plate fingers.

Has anyone tried anything to pull it back or is there adjustment somehow?

On my TR6 I bought a modified kit with a different slave push rod and return spring and never got round to fitting it and foolishly sold it with other spares

    Any suggestions most welcome

    Thank you

    Hi Andrew,

There are some threads on here containing info where owners have installed a spring return mechanism. It was pretty simple if I remember correctly

Hi Mark, thanks, this this could have been me a long time ago.

There was one guy who made something up but he never posted it in action

      Cheers

From your description, it sounds like it might be the gearbox that's noisy, not the thrust bearing on the clutch fingers. The noise disappears because when you press the clutch you disconnect the gearbox from the engine (the neutral gears in the gearbox stop moving).
Have you checked the gearbox oil level ?

Thanks Kithmo, yes your correct, its all gearbox and not bearing but if I can pull bearing away, the gearbox idle shaft wont turn and although oil level is fine, there will always be a noise

Not sure that is correct, the gearbox input shaft is connected to the driven plate, and that doesn't care if the release bearing is spinning or not - it turns with the engine so long as the clutch is engaged.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Good point Wilf, didn't think of that

                Andrew.
It doesn't work like that! The noise you can here is the input shaft bearing in the gearbox going round. It is an irritating one as I know (!) but not uncommon. The only cure is to replace the bearing.
The clutch release bearing is designed to be in permanent contact with the clutch cover, but it is a very light touch, and won't cause any wear. Systems with pull-back springs were also used, but they were not self-adjusting. The full available hydraulic travel of the slave cylinder is needed to make the clutch release. If some of that travel is going to be used to take up a gap between the release bearing and the clutch, you will have problems.
Millions of cars of all makes still use the Stag system. It works!!
                Mike.

                  Thanks, this makes sense
I'll just fill the gearbox to the grim so it will go quiet.......only joking

Or put some thicker oil in.
I remember a mate, back in the 70s, getting a car with a noisy back axle ready for auction by adding sawdust to the diff

Chuck some sawdust in. It worked for Arfur Daley........

Might play havoc with the overdrive though.....LOL!

Input shaft bearing & release bearing noises are becoming more and more common for the simple reason, the cheap replacements have either the wrong clearances or wear out fast or simply are not designed for that task.

The originals were made by RHP and the bearing tolerance was specified as C3.
None of the replacements has the right clearance, so when they get hot they get noisy.

It's painfully obvious such items as this are nasty made in China stuff

The release bearing is the same situation exactly. Marked as "uprated" it's not uprated at all and has exactly the WRONG shape to be running against a belleville spring. Such a bearing MUST have a radius as otherwise it wears the whole clutch cover out.

I don't even want to start on how bad the replacment clutch covers are with the "multi pad" type carbon subs plates....
The same disease has arrived at Jaguar and the replacements are utter crap!

A pretty stupid idea, unless you like a gearbox that drags and won't change gear cleanly for 20 minutes after startup - not to mention what it will do to the overdrive....
