Although you purchased the Stag cheap, it will be difficult to do a reasonable Rover conversion without spending more thanif you had bought a RV8 Stag in the first place, with all the changes to instrument, electrics, etc.Andif you put in a much more powerful engine you will need a back axle/diff upgrade too, plus tubular headers, etc. Easier to find a nice recon Stag V8 to drop in.

But then projects are always interesting if you like the challenge. In that case I would go for a Ford 302 V8 conversion (Mustang etc)as I haven't seen any in the UK, and I think it would be well worth the money spent. That would be a real performer with a reliable engine; and what a sound track they make!
there's a feller in hainault who i bought a few bits off recently has got a triumph 2000 mk 2 with a ford v8 in,looks pretty standard apart from rear axle and tyres,oh and a bloody great hole in the bonnet with the air intakes sticking out!!.nice though.
Polly, do you have any contact details for this guy? I would like to see his car.

I think the Tr2000 engine bay layout/shapeis similar to the Stag.

Have you thought about rebuilding the engine you have ? It may not be cheap but at least you know it is done right. I'm just starting to rebuild mine now after having it rebored and valve guides done, it was supposed to be a 'good' engine but turned out to be an oil burner. You may end up with a similar engine if you buy 'used'.

          Hi

          First post etc

I've owned a Stag for several years, Triumph V8, went through the usual problems, including a coolant pump that wrecked a jackshaft, leaking inlet manifold and driver's side headgasket. When the passenger side headgasket went I'd had enough, RV8 for me, so the Stag sits rather forlornly in the lock-up. Anyhow, I've purchased a RV8 TVR with a view to an engine transplant, lots of fun, uses very little oil and no coolant, although clutch/gearbox "issues" have arisen

But, but, but, the Triumph V8 soundtrack is unbeatable, OK there are plenty of louder V8s but none match the complexity of that Triumph sound. So, if it's a Stag then a Triumph V8 it must be.
