    stag colour code?

hi from a newby, i have recently bought a 1974 Stag which looks to be in its original colour (White), my question is, is there more than 1 white paint shade for this car as i want to get some aerosol cans to repaint the tired looking engine bay & will need to purchase the correct colour for it? has it a certain name?
    many thanks, Mick.

It will be Triumph 19. I think Paddocks sell it in aerosol or you can get it canned at a good paint supplier and some branches of Halfords.

When I was trying to find some of this locally we couldn't find it listed under Triumph. Then an older bloke in the place suggested we look under "Rover" and we found it as Rover Triumph White 19. I have bought it in two places now and although the mixing is computerised I got two distinct shades.

        Good luck

Mick I do believe that the early cars had more of a creamy coloured white opposed to later cars like your own but the paint code was kept to 19.

Whenever I bought a ready mixed aerosol off the shelf it always seemed to cater for the early type which was fortunate for me owning an early car but if Partco mixed a can up for me it came out a lot whiter which would be more suitable for later cars.

Someone might be able to enlighten you further but these are just my findings.

I thought there was only one white (code 19) until reading recently that for '77 they introduced the white paint code 'NAF' . Not sure if it is a different colour or it was an exercise to harmonise the codes across the Leyland group.

As mine is a white '77 car I don't know why I am revealing to the world I have a 'NAF' car

It's NOT the car that is NAF, Alan, just the colour!!:P:P

                  Hi,

When I was after some paint for my beloved WHITE Stag I went to one of the mainpaint shops for the trade and they put some sort of gadget on the car which told them which shade I required, my car had been respayed in the later shade of Old English White Code NAB, which is the brighter white to the earlier Stags which paint code was NBD.

But if you want a true match I suggest you take the car along so they can match it for you, as you do not know if it has had a spray job done which paint or shade they used.

If you can not get the car there take off the boot lock cover from the inside of your boot( if it matches your body work) and take that along, good luck and keep us posted.

Hiya, trouble with the boot lock cover is it lives in the dark and won't be the same colour as the body, I used the boot lid, easy enough to remove and carry about. There were definitely two whites, one was 19 (mine) and the other was called Triumph white. The best aerosol match I've found was from Robsport but without a scanned computerised mix you'll be EXTREMELY lucky to get agood match.

                    Martin.

Hi Steve, sifting through all the paperwork i have that came with the car it has been restored & repainted in the early 90's (new wings, arches etc) & the cars paint has held up fairly well in that time, i suppose on the plus side is that being its the engine bay that i am tackleing & its not an edge to edge colour match so it should not notice too much but i would ideally like it spot on if i can,
                      Mick.

I would take to car to a paint motor facors and if they are any good at mixing paint they will get a spot on match for you

I used to be in the car painting game years ago and you can match anything within reason if you have the time to tint the paint.

As Steve sais theres a good chance a lot of cars now have been resprayed anyway.

Your right about the engine bay Mick,in the local auto factors I can buy a small tin of spray for £1.99,so I can grab a couple of different ones and see what matches best.

If you are doing this with the engine in situ, make sure you mask up well, pull off washer bottle, plug leads, servo pipe etc otherwise you will spend more time trying to clean paint off.

thanks mark, yes i will be stripping most of the ancillaries off & around the engine as i will be refurbing & renewing other parts while i am at it, i am by no means a paint sprayer but i have been a panel beater since the 1970's so im looking forward to getting stuck into something other than metalwork.
