    water pump cage

    Hi All,
Pulled a water pump tonight.....cage was left in.
Never had one that really resisted a slide hammer before, but this one has.
Is cutting the only method left, or are there ingenious other ways?
    Regards
    Julian

No mate - got an extractor that'll bring your cage out in 2 minutes undamaged - do you want to borrow it?

I had exactly the same issue on the motor I'm rebuilding. I made a foot to go on a slide hammer and that eventually persuaded it out

It must be pretty stuck in, both the slide hammer feet I had gave way before the cage moved.
          BTW its not my motor.
Sods law says the cage will suffer, need replacing but the orings will look ok when they are out!
I cant afford to leave it unchecked though.

                Hi Russ

Forgive my ignorance but will your puller only pull the cage once the pump is out (I assume so)?

                Thanks

                Kevin

Are WP repair kits available yet? If not, how do you plan to overhaul please. Thanks Mark

That's right Kevin, if you are lucky the cage comes out with the pump, but all too frequently not - a stuck cage is difficult to get out without damaging hence I designed and made a tool to do the job...

Thanks Mark for taking the time to reply. Any suggestions as to what kit to buy and who from? Cheers Mark

Yes the parts are available afaiaa.
However the currently available seal height is about 3 or 4 mm higher than original.
This can lead to a higher torque to turn the pump.
This can lead to excessive skew gear wear :0

There are some offers of a rebuild service for the pumps on fleabay.

I fitted a new cage and had to machine off a minute amount from the outside diameter. IIRC the seller mentioned at that time on his website that it might be necessary. At first I thought it was just going to be a tight fit but, after measuring both aperture and cage it was clear that some material had to come off.

I am on my second WP resto and the first was no problem as long as you took your time, read up on it first, and most importantly made sure you had good drifts / supports etc to take apart and re-assemble. I am lucky in that I have some old aircraft hinge bushes that are spot on for the job. The ceramic seal installation in the impeller underside on my first one was straight forward too and a lovely job.

That's an interesting point about the seal height, I have just received my non ceramic kit refurb kit from LD parts and noticed the seal is thicker, but have yet to consider it's implications. I guess without thinking further about it at the mo, it will all be down to the pressure applied through the spring. I plan to re-face my impeller so might consider removing some extra material - need to think about that.

The refurb kits are available from LD, and if I remember correctly either Rimmers or Paddocks as well (or both).

I am happy to loan my refurb drifts / support kit if needed after I have done this one.

                              Cheers
