    Need some help please?

    Hello everyone.

I will start by saying i'm no mechanic or engineer and i struggle with a multi meter so please be very specific if you can help in any way.

Two very kind and extremely helpful SOC members, Roger and Bill (you know who you are) helped me to get my MK 2 Stag up and running again recently.

I am now sorting out the bits it needs before pre MOT and i have a couple of issues that i don't understand.
    1) The brakes lights are constantly on when the ignition is on. I have no idea where to start with that one, but i'm sure it must have occurred once or twice to some of you?
    2) The left hand side indicator doesn't flash. I have changed out the rubber holder for a new one and put a new bulb in but still nothing. I have checked the switch itself on the column and the contacts seem to be fine and make contact, nothing is snapped or broken.

    Any ideas to try please?

    Thanks in advance.

Brake lights sound like the switch (mounted just behind the top of the brake pedal) is gone

Mine failed earlier this year, its a little fiddly but not expensive to replace. I think the swiych was only a few quid,

I'm not so sure about the indicators though, sorry.

1 Check the switch operated by the brake pedal, might just need adjusting?
2 Does the bulb not illuminate or does it illuminate but not flash?

Thanks for the reply. Ill take a look at the switch.

The indicator bulb doesn't illuminate at all.

          Cheers

Make sure you have a good earth for the indicators / lights.

              Hi Brian

The indicator on the front, same side as the inoperative side works and lights, main and beam do too, so i'm assuming that the earth would be ok?

              Cheers

The rear indicator will have a separate earth. Do the front and side indicators flash faster on the left than the right?

                  Hi H

I believe (though i will check tomorrow) that the front indicators flash at the same speed both sides, unsure on the side ones as one not working.

                  Cheers

if brake lights are on when you turn the ignition on,you have bent the bracket that holds the brake light switch to the peddal, wwhen pulling the carpet out, just rebend the bracket then brake light should work

                    indicator is a bad earth

Hi Dave there are two leads that come off the bulb holder and plug in to the loom behind the front grille. I am very basic in this kind of thing but where would I check the earth? I think the wires are red and black, which one would be earth and is there a way to earth it easily? Cheers Mike

This is a silly question and I apologise up front. Are you certain that the indicator bulb works? I had a quick re-read of your thread but cannot see whether or not you have said. You did mention that the front indicator lamp does not illuminate at all.

My deduction from this thread is that it is the n/s rear indicator that does not work but both front indicator bulbs do. Also it appears the o/s side indicator does not work. So with one bulb out on each side the rate of flash will be the same but a bit faster than if all 3 bulbs were working.

The positive feed to the n/s rear bulb is green/red and the earth lead is black.

AFAIK all 6 indicators have to work to pass MOT

                            Hi H

It's the front near side indicator that doesn't work. Checked the bulb that's fine.
All indicators other than that one work fine as do hazards other than that one. They all flash at a constant rate, no variance.

How can I check if it's the earth causing the issue?

                            Cheers

                              Hi Paul

I've got new bulbs that work fine on offside side indicator but not on near side.

                              Cheers
