    Dolomite warning light cluster

My original stag 'warning cluster' (Oil/fuel/Brake, etc) looked rough - so I saw a dolomite(?) cluster unit (face) on eBay and bought it - to improve the dashboard look, which it most certainly does.

The problem is - the bulbs from the stag seem too dim to get trough the warning segments. You cant see anything in direct sunlight and even when there's no direct sunlight it has to be dark to see most of the segments

If I am low on fuel while driving during daylight hours I would have to 'cup' may hands around the fuel warning light to actually see it.

So - anyone know why or if there's a solution?

Once again - thanks in advance for the vast amount of knowledge on these boards

I can think of 3 solutions - try them in order......

    1. bypass the rheostat on the dashboard - gives an instant boost to the whole dashboard.
    2. If that doesn't work you can replace the bulbs with LEDs - threads detailing which ones can be found on search or there is a supplier that sells a kit (classic car leds).
    3. if all else fails try to get a decent stag one or go back to the original.

    Cheers,

    Ed.

I can also recommend these guys http://bettercarlighting.co.uk/index...&productId=488 - very pleased with the brightness, and the light fills the whole of each segment (lens-types aren't as good in this respect). As you'll see in the blurb, some of the cluster bulbs are +ve pin; some -ve pin (LEDs are polarity sensitive). The IGN warning light is a bit tricky as this needs to pass the current to get the alternator charging and the LED bulbs wont pass enough, so you need to install a resistor in parallel to allow proper functioning. I decided just to leave this one as an incandescent and it's fine for me.

Almost certainly, the bulb holder "ring" will need to be opened up a touch as all available modern bulbs all seem a bit fatter than the originals.

I've disassebled 3 or 4 of the different light clusters from Stag Mk1 and Mk2 and an 'unknown' (probably Dolomite) and the pins and connections were all different. It would surprise me if the Dolly was 'plug 'n' play' in a Stag if you're using the original connector. May be possible that some bulbs have ended up being connected in series. The wiring is certainly not a one-pi-earth and all others +ve on the ones I've disassembled.

I've done Point "1" already as it didn't do anything and whe general dash was dark before removing it - I have a "warning ICE" in the the hole it left behind
I like the idea of solution 2 though - modern but hidden!

I think I'll go with a kit and leave IGN as a bulb

              Thanks all - great information!

I got the set. Managed to break 2 of them far too easily but never mind - I'll try to order individual ones.
One thing is odd. The lights should be all white - as the translucent warning signs are already coloured but white ones would be even brighter - but the lamps emit the colour of the dial. I think I'm entering a zone called "Pedentary" !! Anyway - the surviving LED bulbs are brilliant

...and another odd thing - the 'fuel is nearly empty or you're on a steep hill' light is ..... GREEN. Hardly a warning colour that prevents you from parking on the hard shoulder :-)

Someone may have messed with the coloured segments. From memory, green is typically direction and Oil; Blue for High Beam; Red for IGN, H'Brake & Fuel Yellow for Choke on my Mk2.

Mine has yellow for parking, green indicators, oil red, ing red, choke yellow and then green for fuel

Being green for fuel makes me think - go on driving, all is good, green means good, you are safe!!!

Mine has green for oil and indicators, red for IGN and low fuel, yellow for choke and handbrake. Usually, on most cars, lis fuel is yellow and this red is rather agressive as it starts to blink when tank has about 15 liters left.

The filters are easily dropped out and put back incorrectly. The colours should be:

                          Red: Ign, Fuel
                          Green: Oil and Turning lights
                          Handbrake and Choke are yellow
                          Main Beam is blue.
