    Servo kits

My servo appears to be working as when I press the brake pedal after engine is turned off I can hear the pressure being held until I press the pedal a couple of times.

My question is, being there are servo kits available, do you get any other benefits in overhauling a servo other than it holding its vacuums? I mean, would there be more vacumn and therefore better brakes or is it just the case, the servo will either work or not?

    Cheers

That sounds normal, as long as it keeps vacuum for a couple of pumps.. Normally they fail when the rubber diaphragm tears but yours sounds OK.
There are a few valves inside but properly overhauling a servo is not for the faint hearted!!

I pride myself on doing everything but the servo was sent off!

    Take a look here..

The only problem with rebuilding the servo is getting the two halves apart, but beware of large spring flying out. I did it without any special tools. Your servo seems to be working OK anyway.

I've had servos apart in the past, I don't remember using any of the tools mentioned in the Buckeye website. I may have just been lucky.

Do not recall much difficulty doing this task other than separating the two halves ,yours does sound as though its ok so unless it needs replating i would leave well alone andrew

I will stop, well that's what i keep telling myself. Takes a bit of getting use to but it's a bit like having a woman, you've got to be very firm and push as hard as you can, then and only then you might get a bit of a squeal.

I had to run my V8 Toledo on non servo brakes after fitting it with a 248 solid lifter cam. Problem was that there was virtually no vacuum at idle (not really any idle for that matter, it is really a race/rally cam).

Coming to a halt I found the servo ceased to function as the revs dropped to its 1200 - 1500rpm idle, so the brake pedal pressure would suddenly increase by three times with no warning. Caused a couple of brown trouser moments in traffic!

Brake pedal was mighty heavy, but at least it was consistent!

I agree with that, you constantly have to remember that they're not normal brakes. Mines a OBP peddle box with brake bias. It still needs to set up to get the best out of it. The front pads are new and have got to wear in yet. They have not got up to temperature yet either so that doesn't help.
