    Windscreen chrome fittings

    Hello everybody,

At the moment I am struggling with the chrome fittings around the windscreen. The windscreen is in, but the seal (2 yrs. old only!) was not okay. So there was always water coming in. We added some Teroson to the seal to make it watertight. But I simply can't get the chrome fittings back on again.

Andrew (Dasadrew") wrote that he produced two special tools for that.

There seems to be another trick with a cord laid into the outside groove of the seal to raise that outer lip.

What method or tool can you recommend? I was told that the chrome moulding should be fitted before fitting the windscreen. But this did not work, when I replaced the windscreen two years ago. The chrome fitting kept popping out again.

    Best wishes,

    Dieter - from Germany.

I had a new seal fitted two weeks ago.
the screen was put into the seal, then the chrome and then inserted into the car body. it was quite a job and i was glad the guys fitting it knew what they were doing. the rope was only used to finally get the seal into the body. i was asked to sit inside the car and pull the rope while the fitters held the screen centrally in the aperture. the whole job took just over an hour!
    good luck. Paul

      Paul,
The problem is that I cannot get the windscreen out any more, as it is glued in and sealed with Teroson....
      Best wishes,
      Dieter.

I've used the cord in the seal trick; it works but needs a lot of patience

A good description on the techinque is here:

can you use a knife to slit open the seal and remove the windscreen and then pull the remains of the seal from the body?

          regards Paul

You may also need to check that the mouldings aren't distorted, pulling 40 ish year old mouldings out of old windscreen rubbers can distort the shape making it really difficult to make them fit properly again... don't ask me how I know

There was also an issue that came to light on here a year or two ago about there being an undocumented change in the size of the slot in the back of the chrome strip and the corresponding protrusion in the rubber, meaning that if you got the wrong combination the chrome strip would either be virtually impossible to put on, or would not stay on. I think the former was the most prevalent!

Same thing happened on my MGB, the rubber was just slightly oversized and that made it impossible to get the glass in and frame tightened up. Eventually I cracked the screen. It was only when I got a new screen and rubber seal that I realised that the one I had been trying to use was too thick. Grrrr..

                  Gentleman,
Thank you for your hints. I will try the rope trick first and let you know...
                  Best wishes,

I've just had my screen re-sealed too. I must confess I took it in to have it professionally done at a specialist in Chesterfield. They used the 'rope trick' - but I'm so glad I had guys that knew what they were doing as it took two of them over an hour to do............and they said mine was a straightforward job!

David, if it's not too personal a question, what did they charge you? I had a new screen fitted 3 years ago and despite getting hem back 'cos it leaked, it still does. I believe the screen may need to be removed and re-sealed to cure the leak, but a little too late under warranty now. Good job, as many know, I don't usually take my car out in the rain! Frightened it may dissolve.........

For the Moggy Minor screen, they do a plastic chrome trim, put in after putting the screen and seal in, which is slightly larger but much easier to put in than the metal one (using a diamond shaped wire tool). It cured my leaky screen, due to it being slightly wider, as it pressed the rubber down firmer on the outside. Just wondered if that would be suitable for the stag, it's available in any length.

Not the same fitting at all. The later Minors (1956 on) had what I would call a conventional simple windscreen rubber with a central external insert which was designed to spread the rubber and lock everything into place. They are easy to fit and the plastic/chrome effect strip is also available in plain black rubber. In order for the rubber to seat properly this insert must be fitted as it spreads the rubber and , as you said, has the effect of pushing the outer edges of the rubber onto the glass and the body work. The Stag trim is as far as I can see purely decorative - someone will probably now tell me otherwise. My car hasn't had one all the time I have owned it and the rubber does not leak. My old 1950's Standard Vanguard had a similar trim to the Stag. That was a real pic to fit as well.#

Hi Ian F. I got the seal from Rimmer Bros, and the screen was fitted for £60.00 by Direct windscreens. I've just done a trip from Norwich to Derbyshire in the worst rain I've seen for years........and not a leak in sight. £60.00 well spent IMHO :-)

There are two varIants in the trim and two corresponding rubber seals. See this thread from Drew.
