Core plug installation

Hi Guys,

Can anyone advise me on the do's & don'ts on core plug installation please? It seems pretty straight forward to me but I like to ask when I do something new. Am thinking plugs in the freezer, maybe warmed head a little, find a socket that's as close a fit as possible (or even better, turn a drift with a suitable rad on it to fit perfectly into the plug to prevent the walls from distorting) and persuade it in, using something like blue Hylomar to seal perhaps?

don't cool the plugs or warm the head, use a socket approx 1.5mm (ish) smaller than the inside dia of the plug, you will never get it out if you use a socket the same size as the plug. I have know of several plugs that have come out in recent years, so now if I am replacing any I use epoxy resin to seat and seal them in. Just my thoughs.

Two "professional sources" nearby (Machine shops) strictly counselled against using a mandrel which sits inside the core plug and advised to press it in squarely and flatly on the rim. I fashioned a mandrel out of wood which sat in the core plug and in a suitable size socket, aligning said socket to sit on the rim and preventing the rim from denting. By using wood I was also confident to be able to extract the mandrel afterwards too!

Pretty sure "Down the plug hole" could give good advice on this one.
