    Shortening my SUs

    Hello,
    I have a Rover 3.5 in mine.
Does anyone know the correct procedure to reduce the height of my carbs to stop them beating a tune on the bonnet?
I have seen photos of the stack being reduced to nearly nothing, wondered how it was done.
    Thank you

Various S.U. Carbs are available with shorter dashpots. You will also need a shorter damper to screw in the top. First step is to identify what carbs you have currently fitted. If you are lucky there will be a small brass or aluminium tag attached to one of the screws either on the dashpots or the top of the float bowl. If there is note down the number and then "google" it. Once you know what carb it is see if there was a shortened version of the dashpot available. Shortened dashpots were fitted to quite a few JAGs, earlier TR's, GT6 to name a few. Often it was just the front carb that was "lower" to clear the bonnet.

As yours is a none standard fitment then the short dashpot may not be short enough and you will have to get it machined - i.e. get the top turned down and the internal thread extended, then shorten the damper to suit.

FYI Ian's sold the business - as I found out the other day when I chased a response to an email about their adjustable drag struts. See announcement on the website. Paul Thomas is now in charge. I believe the intention is to carry on with the current offering, but with more emphasis on doing the conversions as a service.

The SU carbs on an MGB V8 has a manifold which places the carbs at the rear of the engine so it fitted under the mg bonnet. This manifold would probably suit you. I had a Weber on my 3.5 and currently use EFI on my current lump so I have no experience of modifying for SU setup.
