    Mechanical Temperature Gauge

I’ve just ordered a mechanical temp gauge to fit in place of the electric one, am I right in assuming The temp bulb fits in the same place as the electric sender?

Yes, but you may need an adaptor.

Dunno about the mechanical water temp gauge, my capillary water/oil gauge goes into the RH Transfer housing as opposed to the original in the LH Transfer housing.

        Ah.

Mine may not have been standard to begin with then, as the electric water temp transmitter was fitted to the RH head (as you look from the front of the engine), and all I did was to fit a thread conversion piece that gave enough "height" for the capillary bulb to seat into (otherwise it bottoms out).

          Thanks Drew

I already have a mechanical (capillary) oil gauge in place of the clock, so my plan is to replace the existing electric water temp gauge using the existing threaded fitting for the current sender.

That’s very helpful, I think Drew is referring to the heads as looking from the drivers seat!

Yep. Same as for any car, boat, ship, plane etc., the same as the LH and RH cast on the heads, and the same as the side where those orangey things light up when you indicate to turn left or right!

I've seen a few in St. Ives doing that too!

Yes but that's the east European artic trucks being driven with expired tachographs pulling out of junctions at 1 am (probably with a bunch of bad injectors, empty Urea tanks, bald re-cut tyres and a bunch of other non documented ills), never a local!!!

                            Yep. Well done!

Must admit to being lost why people quote right hand looking at the engine. I can see it now: "Yes officer, he did crash into me although I was indicating to turn right with my right hand indicator" Officer: "was that the right hand indicator looking at the car from the front or from behind the car sir?"

For me, it stems from working on a number of Yank engines, where l/r is often stated as from the front of the engine. Mind you, they keep their engines under a hood anyway.

But I promise to keep to the correct definition for Stags from now on.
