Is that an MTU genset in your avatar? air filters gave it away. We have one also 1.2mw and have just done 110% load test on it. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, somewhere around 3000bhp i think. Those 4 turbos were busy.

We also have 2x 30mw gas turbines and compressors each capable of blowing 100million cubic metres of gas at 85bar (1200psi) per day down the pipes to keep your fires burning.

There is also a couple of 15mw Cyclones and a couple of old Rolls Royce Avons as standby. Replacement oil pump for an Avon is £80,000 and engine is around £400,000. Thay last around 40.000 hours though (10yrs avg)

I have the job of fixing that lot (theres only me)and some of the plant is over 30yrs old.Makes the Stag a doddle.

Sorry to bore y`all but im sitting here waiting for a delivery of air filters to keep me busy for a fortnight changing them. There are 740 costing £72,000 the lot though im trying to get a discount.

Now you know why gas is dear

High Dougie, yep, its an MTU ADEC 4000 series running a 2.2MVA UPS. I was commissioning 12 of them in Almera Holland for KPN (dutch telecom)

At 1600KW they really whistle nicely and the turbos glow a nice shade of Orange (Topaz??)

I also service these machines and stuff that's 20+ years old, but i'm electrically biased.

Nice to have someone on here who knows what i do.

    Who do you work for?

    Jason

p.s, just changed my Avatar as i was getting bored with it!!

We have 2x 415v battery pack UPS which come on till genny gets going.
I am working for National Grid at mo. Was meant to be a staff job but economic climate and a lot of compressor stations are being decomissioned or converted to electric drives for emission reasons so its a contract till june.
Have to say its the most boring job ever so ill be glad to get out.The old plant is knackered and only runs in dire emergencies. The new plant is old enough to have got over comissioning bugs but not old enough to be worn so its all ppm`s and waiting for something to go wrong which is usually an instrument failure, and we went the whole summer and never blew a hoot of gas

So, are you part of an FM team at one site?

My job is mobile because we have about 150 machines around the UK.

I think we've sold 10-12 units for installation this year plus helping our Dutch counterparts out abroad, should hopefully be a busy year which i'm glad about because every time i turn the news on another 1000 jobs are going
