    Alternative Alternator Wiring

    Hi All,

I have just done a search and cannot find ref my question below which surprises me as I expected it would be a common question. There is lots of stuff about the Alternator change but not the wiring unless I have searched using the wrong question, if so does someone have a link explaining what is required.

Would I be correct if replacing the early Alternator with the later type all I need to do is to connect the thick brown wire to the new alternator and connect the brown/purple to the alternator ( Ignition warning lamp ). All I will need to then do is to disconnect ( unplug ) the relay control box on the inner right wing. I will of course make sure that the plug from the relay control box is insulated with tape. Sounds a bit too easy or am I missing something ( apart from many brain cells ).

    Many thanks, Don Kennedy

That's all there is to it Don...... and one of the best things you'll ever do to improve reliability on your Stag...

      Hi Don

Don't you have a Straight Six in your car? If so sorting the wiring out will have easier access than the Stag

        Hi Russ,

        Many thanks,

        Hi Stuart.

Yes straight six fitted. Looks easy ( hope that is not a kiss of death comment ).

As always, Russ, there is always the exception. Never had an alternator problem in 18+ years with the original setup on my Mk1. This one has been changed at some time and I had alternator failure not long after buying it. Admittedly someone had fitted the wrong type of alternator, which didn't help...............

Absolutely Dave, I agree completely, but the one advantage you have with the ACR is it works/it doesn't work and a 2 minute diagnostic.... not which bit has gone wrong and where can I buy the bits...........

True, Russ. But I did like the idea that you could get inside the relay box and clean contacts or make adjustments to keep things going a bit longer if necessary, like I had to do many moons ago on a Mk1 MGB. (Language Timothy!!)

I used a peg on myMk1 relay box because the terminals werent touching which meant it wasnt charging,it got me to Shuttleworth were I bought a new relay box from the autojumble.

With three different things to go wrong on the 11ac set up itis a bit of a performance and the 11ac alternator tends to be dearer than the 18acr alternator, but in its defence changing that relay box on top of the turret beats that poxy job of changing the alternator.
