    Sudden cutting out.

Hi all. Brain picking time again!
My Stag cut out yesterday at about thirty mph and after I’d coasted to a halt would not restart as no ignition. Had power as hazards etc worked but turning the key produced nothing at all - wouldn’t turn over and no warning lights etc. I checked under the bonnet for anything obvious but could see nothing. Tried a couple more turns of the key and then suddenly she turned over and fired up. Has been fine since. Anyone experienced this? And did you find the cause? All advice gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a loose wire somewhere - coil leads maybe....

I had this happen to me during the summer
I had to get recovered by the good old RAC
I cleaned all electrical terminals on ignition system and on the fuel pump ect
I also stripped down the fuel cut out thingy and cleaned the contacts and ball bearing
      hasn't happened since
oh..... make sure a PO hasn't installed fuel pump cut out switches under the dash and in the boot that mine has,a cause of past calls for the RAC lol

Have you got Lumenition fitted? If so, check the multi-plug. These can get loose or corroded. Waterproof equivalents are available and easily fitted.

had that once on Paul's stag,it turned out to be the thin white wire going to starter motor, loose connection on spade terminal

Bit of a clue in the "no warning lights" and "wouldn't turn over", but "hazards working". Has to be a failure of the main ignition controlled feed. Personall would check that first before worrying about fuel pump, good old "reliable" lumenition, coil wiring or inertia switch.

Yep, basics first, ign feeds and don't forget earths on the same circuits.

When it happened with me it was corrosion in the main ignition feed .Multiplug just behind steering column.

" wouldn’t turn over and no warning lights etc "

Definitely not in the depths of the ignition or the fuel pump; either of these would prevent it firing, but not prevent it turning over. Follow the wiring diagram to see what components and connections could affect both the starter feed and all the warning lights.

Aren't the warning lights are on ign circuit ?

                      Maybe I wasn't clear enough.

Some suggestions above refer to electronic ignition, coil leads, fuel pump, etc. I was suggesting that these are not involved, as the lack of starter motor and warning lights means that power is not getting to main circuits, so the volts need following from the battery through the ignition switch to these items, to see where it stops.
Yes, the ignition power is on the same circuits, so almost certainly there is no power to the ignition, as well as the starter and warning lights.
In our advice, we need to make the distinction between the power to the ignition components, and the components themselves.

A few suggestions above indicate likely sources; connections on the steering column, the ignition switch itself, earth connections. However, as the starter circuit and the warning lights have separate earth paths, it is unlikely to be both of those. They would also need the main battery earth connection, but as the hazard lights were working, I think the battery earth is OK.

Guys - thanks for all your help last time. This time I have parts enquiry. After recent bodywork I 'm looking for the 3 brackets that hold the fuel filler neck in place inside the boot behind the filler cap - metal about 2 inches long and held on to the threaded bolts with small nuts and washers (need them too!!). Rimmers cannot supply - any ideas please? All help really appreciated please as currently cap held on with just one!!

                        Thanks in advance.

so what was the fault finally?

                            The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137
