    Battery clamp

    Hi guys

My Stag has never had a battery clamp fitted in my ownership. I've bought one but am unsure how to fit it. Please could someone tell me where the bolts go? One long one, one short.

Also looks like it may come a bit close to the terminals so think I'll need to trim it to avoid unwelcome sparks!

    Cheers

Here's a photo of mine. I have swapped the battery so that the terminals are opposite to standard to make it a little safer, to avoid the '+' lead being too close to the PS pump pulley, and have added some spiral protection on the cable where it could rub on metal. The clamp needs to have the kick-out end next to the inner wing, and the longer of the two threaded rods goes down inside a square channel on the outer side of the battery tray, where it then hooks on to secure itself. The shorter threaded rod goes next to the radiator, where there's a corresponding location hole to hook into. It's a fiddly job, but make sure that you keep any metal away from the terminals (insulate them well before starting), otherwise the job suddenly gets rather exciting!

I've been waiting for years to upload this pic - I knew the question would come sometime. This is in the inner wing looking through the side indicator lens cutout. You can see the fiddly way that the battery clamp is hooked in place.

Mine's obviously different as the short rod is away from the radiator like in the above photo. I lost the first short rod when it fell into the depths of the front wing. Magnets didn't work as they stuck to the wing! I guess I might be able to get at it through the indicator cut out.

Discarded the Battery clamp when I acquired a larger (snug fit) 80amp Battery.
Although you can't see it in the photo, there is a strap halfway down that keeps it in place also.
Also since I took the photo, the earth strap and earth key have been relocated.

Where Drew's clamp is, mine is not, the clamp has been welded by PO to the access hole but I don't use it.

Like Martins, but I used a self tapping screw at the bottom of the battery where it has a lip and screwed into the tray, holds quite well but don't forget it will rust without protection.

Just stuck my hand down inside the inner wing, and Drew's picture is correct; that's where the short rod lives.

Thanks for the replies and great photo inside the wing! Only issue now is that the hooked end of the bolt is too fat to fit down that small box section, unless I can fiddle it into place through the round hole.

I'd be surprised if grinding it is necessary- it takes a bit of juggling as it has to be rotated to engage after the hook is in the channel. Mine is also one I bought from a supplier. It took several attempts to get it in place - hence the sticky tape holding it so it didn't fall out again!

The last time I renewed my battery I chose one with the terminals away from the securing clamp.
