    Stop the alternator belt squealing?

I have a new 60A alternator in the original position with a new belt. Sometimes when I drive away it squeals, especially if the headlights or fan are on.

The belt is properly adjusted. Can anyone suggest a solution for the squeal?

Seriously though sounds like a loose belt.
or you could try a differnt belt, they do get glazed sometimes or is the taper of the belt not gripping because the belt has bottomed out due to the new altenator pulley having a different section.

        +1 on Stagdad's posting.
Having replaced belts and found it was impossible to keep them tight and squeal free I spoke with Peter at LD Parts. He sent me a belt with what he described as a 'wider correct profile'. It filled the pulleys and left lots of room on the adjuster. End of problem

Talc stops them squealing but it doesn't stop them slipping.

This is an option but not necessarily a permanent cure.

              Fairy liquid works.
              Simple.

Turn the headlights or fan off?

Posts #3 & #4 have the answer. Fit a new belt with the correct profile for the pulleys.

I suppose it’s my own fault for buying the new belt from Rimmers......

Do you know the correct belts Dave? I ask because my PAS belt does the same and Klaus' too. Klaus says that the width is wrong (10mm vs. 9.75mm or something like that) but hasn't found a source for the correct original width.

If you have a source for the correct dimensioned belts that would be great!

My last belt came from Paddocks and has never squealed. The only time the previous one made a noise was just before it shredded itself. You need "He-Man" muscles to drive the car without power steering.

That's the one that squeals Brian. It has a 10mm width and Klaus seems to have found out that the original was 3/8" or similar which equates to about 9.6mm. Sounds plausible that Triumph wasn't using metric size belts in 1974. I've tightened the belt considerably and the squeal goes away most of the time.
