    New soft top & frame

I think I have asked this before, but can't find the Thread.

I would like a complete new soft top & frame if I could get one sent to Tenerife some way.
Who is it who sells the complete unit so I can contact them for prices and shipping costs?

My current soft top is torn, which is why I use a tonneau cover when the hardtop is off, but the tonneau
itself is no longer in the best condition, and the "hooks" on it that grip the air vents on the dashboard are breaking up.

    Regards

I had mine restored by Stagweber - maybe they have soft tops for sale? His avatar on this forum is vmad and his names Chris Spain.
I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!

No longer on this forum. Just google Stagweber and you'll find their contact details.

South West Trimmers did a refurbed frame and new hood for me recently - I would recommend them

It will be expensive to send your old frame back for exchange. I would ask what an outright buy would cost or see if a friend here can get a frame from Ebay or similar and use for exchange. It would depend on what the price difference is.

Thanks for the replies and PM.
I wasn't thinking of sending the old frame back - just purchasing a new one with soft top attached.

As far as I know you cannot get new frames so your best bet will be a reconditioned one which pretty much points you down the exchange route I would have thought.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I would be surprised if it would be any different. Would it be an option to buy an unfitted soft top and get someone to refurbish your frame and fit the hood somewhere more local to you? If that is the case I would probably look to Aldridge trimming to source it from.

                  Regards

Terry why don't you find a trimmer on the island and then strip your own and rub down and paint the frame yourself as you have nothing else to do apart from snooker and sunning yourself and trains and drink and then get one sent out from Aldridge as suggested by Dave

Yes Andrew, Life is so hard out here I never have any spare time. You forgot to mention going away on cruises, the next one being to the Caribbean & Cuba in the New Year, when I hope to drive a 50s/60s Classic Big Yank car. Got a special birthday coming up this December just before we go away, and I have a feeling my son is trying to book me something for when we get to Cuba as he keeps asking what car I would like to drive.

(PS. If you (Forum Members) were in Cuba and had the chance to drive one of their Classic US cars,
which would you choose - a '57 Chevrolet, a 50s Buick, or an old Cadillac, or what?, maybe one of the ones shown in this video clip - I like the '61 Impala - https://youtu.be/l6B3rOcZO6k)

Back to the main subject of the Thread, there is actually nothing wrong with my frame, it is just the soft top that is damaged. I will try again to find someone here who could fit a new one, but haven't been sucessful so far. I could then have Aldridge send one out, or pick it up when next over in the U.K.

Just to chuck my two penneth in but how difficult is it to fit your own soft top? I've never done one on a Stag but some years ago I fitted a new Double Duck top on an MGB and I don't recall it being too hard to say it was done outside in the street. Also if you have a warm climate to make everything nice and supple that must make it easier. I did mine on my own but again if you can find an assistant that surely will help

How difficult can it be? (to quote a well known phrase or saying)
Actually, I did do my first one back in the 1980's by myself (new cover on the existing frame). The result was pretty good, although the one I have now was done by SE Trimming, and is better. Probably with some assistance from someone who knows about these things, and all the guidance from this forum, I would say it can be done.

I've seen a couple of TV shows such as A Car Is Born and Wheeler Dealers and one of the most important things seems to be temperature which helps the fabric stretch and ensures it's taut when the hood is raised. I seem to remember Edd China using a space heater to warm up the workshop. When I fitted my MGB hood about 20 years ago I waited until it was a warm, dry and sunny day so I'd have thought Tdm would have been able to pick a suitable day, assuming he wants to try it himself

The hood on my Stag was fitted by the previous owner and is as tight as a drum so I have to undo the windscreen fasteners first before attempting to release the back pin from the tonneau cover, which is the opposite to the normal instructions which tells you to release the back first. I struggled like hell when I first bought the car and dropping the hood involved a lot of cursing but I've got it sussed now.
