The led units l have got both have a heat sync/fan on the back and along with the fitted plug all fits in the standard headlamp bowl ok.
Thought l would have to cut the back out but thankfully proved an unfounded worry.

I changed by headlight bowls to plastic many years ago when you couldn't get the headlight adjusters for the steel ones.
So cutting a hole would not be a problem.
If you can fit the LED unit within the bowl, I would not be surprised for potential problems due to heat build up as the unit will be enclosed in a non vented enclosure.

There is a good 10mm gap all around the lamp to bowl, only time will tell.

That's probably why the heat sink is so large, being designed for purpose where the surrounding air is largely captive. At 25W vs 55/60W, there's a lot less heat being generated than with standard incandescents.

Got a set ~ 1 year ago, but not yet fitted - inertia plus being advised of potential MOT failure as not Type Approved. Now that MOT exemption is on the horizon, will fit, provided I can get the appropriate beam pattern not to dazzle.

The difference in heat generated is immaterial, what is important is that a filament lamp can operate reliably in a high ambient whereas an LED can’t. In the aim of bulb life it would be wise to ventilate the LED to keep it as cool as possible.

Type approval determines that a bulb/housing is tested and approved, hence fitting a bulb not tested in a particular housing is “illegal”. The MOT is only interested in beam pattern, aim and relative brightness. The elimation of the MOT will not prevent the Police stopping you.

I've ordered and fitted a set from ClassiccarLED and they are brilliant plus super quick delivery.

The photo below shows the difference, LED side light on the right.

Steve, glad you found them ok. If your doing the inside, try the green L.E.D bulbs from the same company for the dials on the dash. Makes them so much easier to read, not bright enough to dazzle and take your eye from the road but a real improvement on the filament bulbs.
