    Mounting motor on engine stand

Morning all, and a very merry Christmas to you all!

I am ready to start the re-assembly of my motor and have been kindly loaned a Clark 500 rotary stand. I'm unsure as to how people have used these stands (I never have before, always bench built bike motors) in terms of how to attach the mounting arms to the motor. It has 4 of the adjustable / removable arms that bolt to the rotating face plate and attach to the motor. They seem the same as most stands on the market. The motor attachment of these arms is what is troubling me. Have those of you that have used these in the past made an interface plate between the arms and the motor please?

    Thanks in advance

    Regards

    Mark,

I have a different make of engine stand. In order to get the engine to balance I had to position the rectangular adjustable arm plate vertically to be able to get the engine stand pivot to be about 2-3 inches above the line of the crankshaft, then the engine was reasonably balanced and could be rotated easily'ish.

I did not need an intermediate mounting plate.

In that position the attachment arms could just be coupled to the flywheel cover where the gearbox attaches. The arms do not attach symmetrically but hold the engine well.

Don't forget an oil drip tray below the frame. (B&Q grow bag tray is good!)

      Thanks for reply Alan,

Interesting that you used the flywheel cover as a kind of interface plate - I have been considering that as well.

I don't fancy the idea of mounting the engine on 4 small dia threads (1/4 or 5/16 from memory, one or the other!) which aren't supported in the much larger dia arms tubing. I could use some studding through the arm tubes and get some spacers made with an OD that match the arms tube ID and an ID to suit clearance on the studding I guess, at least the studs would be supported then.

      Regards

i have recently had my Stag and TR6 engines on a stand and just bolted them onto the rear of the engine block. It was absolutely fine. i think we all worry to much ! Dont forget thats what the stands are designed to do. Just use proper bolts not ones from B & Q.

Hi Mark, my stand is not Clark but they are all similar. I will try and attach some photo's. As someone has said be VERY aware of balance before removing whatever is holding it. STAND.jpgSTAND1.jpgSTAND2.jpg

            Mark,

Yes there are only four thin bolts, the lower of the two bolts are in shear, the upper two are being pulled outwards by the weight of the engine pivoting around the lower bolts.
But plenty of strength in reserve as long as the bolts are good quality.

Thanks for the replies Guys. My concern was having the small bolts unsupported going through the tubes directly onto the block, putting them in a shear as well as a bending moment situation. Using the flywheel cover is definitely the answer for me as I can attach that with all the small bolts, then use M8's etc or as large as I can fit, onto the gearbox mount face through the tubes.

Happy days, let the rebuild begin!

Thanks again guys - top help!!

                hi Mark
just to clarify...i bolted the engine stand bracket direct to the back of the block....Not saying anything wrong with leaving the ali back plate on either.

Except you can't fit the rear seal housing and therefore the sump either.

Some pics of the attachment points I used. Transferred engine to trolley crate and removed engine stand 'spider' to fit spacer.

Rear housing and sump no problem with the engine stand fitted.

But you didn't have the Ali adaptor fitted did you? Which is what I was saying would get in the way.
