    Wooden steering wheel

I've been contemplating treating myself and my car to a polished wooden steering wheel and wondered if anyone had any thoughts as to which is the best. Rimmers sell both Mota-Lita and Mountnay but obviously at over £200 it's a lot to pay for something unseen. I think the Mota-Lita looks nicer in the pictures and I like the riveted finish on the rim but what is the quality like? Any input would be very welcome, including ease of fitting, flat or dished and what they look like on the car.

    Thanks
    Richard

    Hi Richard,

I always fit a wood steering wheel to my classic cars and have had both Mountney and Mota-Lita wheels.

I went to a shop where they had all the different makes and sizes, including various dish depths. That way I was able to choose the one I liked the most.

You’re not going to buy one a new one every week so choose the one you’re happiest with and don’t worry too much about the price.

Hi Andy, thanks for the input. Which make did you prefer? As I said I do like the look of the riveted Mota-Lita which seems to be a nicer finish. As I live in the Yorkshire Dales we're a bit short on Automotive dealer in these parts. I know Rimmers aren't the cheapest supplier but at least I'd be confident it would fit rather than buying something on Amazon for example. Even my nearest Halfords is a 40 mile round trip and they may not have something in stock that I like or that will be compatible. I don't really want a sort of "one size fits all" type of thing.

It would very helpful if any members had a photo of their car showing off a nice wooden steering wheel so I could visualise exactly what it would look like.
      thanks
      Richard

Got mine from "vintage 65" on ebay.
Motalita with a boss and £80.00 cheaper than l could find anywhere else.
Just in the process of making an ally centre for it, the bravery test will be do l mill STAG in the middle like the overpriced ones that are for sale.

Hey Phil,I've just been checking out that Vintage 65 site on ebay. They do have some very nice looking wheels. My only concern would be whether they would actually fit. Did yours come with the boss or adaptor needed? I don't have an ebay account but I don't suppose it's that difficult to open one.

I have a semi dished 14inch Mota Lita, been in the car for around 10years, still perfect. I did buy a nice billet alloy centre for it though because I thought the plastic centre a bit tacky!

Yes I know what you mean, that's why I was after a photo if possible. The ones that Phil mentioned on the Vintage 65 ebay site do seem to have a nice alloy centre whereas those from Rimmers don't quite do it for me

I have the 14” semi-dished Mota Lita in a mid brown to complement the Stag wood.

To be honestly the rim is thinner than I would like, but it looks so right. Away at the moment, but will post picture when back.

As I said you only buy one, so go for the one you’re happiest with as you’ll have to live with it.

My wheel is a semi dished 14" and it came with a boss and allan screws to mount.
The centre supplied is black plastic.
                    Will post a picture tomorrow.

This is mine Richard, had it on there a lot of years now, semi dished with cobra type slots. It was originally lighter in colour but I have stripped it back and restained and varnished it to match the dash.

Just be aware that if the wheel has polished chrome, it can be quite dazzling with the top down and the sun behind you. I find this a bit distracting, particularly if on a straight road.

Re the boss in the centre, it's fairly easy to fit the original Stag boss without permanently modifying it, using a magnet, steel disc and a screw. I posted the parts and method on here about 18 months ago.

This is the one I like it solves the stag twitch too.

The Stag Boss fits mine without any mods. 13" wheel in this case.
