Has anyone had a steering lock while driving?

Okay, not a Stag issue, but my neighbour's garden wall was demolished yesterday by a driver who claimed that the steering locked up while driving along the road causing the car to veer off into the wall. Why the brakes also didn't work is anyone's guess.

Reason I'm spooked is that if the steering had locked the other way my Stag would have been mangled, it was parked right opposite the wall.

Never heard of a failure in 43 years in the motor trade, I think the mechanism prevents its operation unless the key is removed, I'm not trying it !!!!

Perhaps it was "lubricated" or the driver was

The brakes possibly also failed as the dipstick driving possibly turned the ignition off after a stalled engine them panicked as no brake assistance and can't re start as desperately trying to turn the wheel, came across this once when l had a tall pointy hat and a blue suit with shine buttons.

Happened to a friend (RogerK) in his Stag whilst I was following in mine.
It was a bit disconcerting to say the least but fortunately was at slow speed and even more fortunately it steered directly into a pub car park.
I think it was a part in the rack valve had come loose and jammed.

Probably the engine cut and he lost brake servo and power steering assistance. Either that or he turned the car off while it was moving.

The only problem I ever had with a steering lock engaging without warning was when I was towing a car and the guy who was being towed forgot to put his keys in the ignition. As soon as we turned a corner we came to a very sharp stop,fortunately without incident

Only had that happen in my youth when turning the ignition on and off trying to obtain a back fire, if you turn the key one to many places and the key came out, Dark Stain in pants! was on a Ford
