Have I broken my "adjustable" headrest?

As I am quite tall, I thought I would adjust my headrest to a better height for where my head is. So I pulled the headrest upwards but found it very difficult to move at all and you can probably guess what happened next - yes it came flying out from the back of the seat! Not a problem I thought , I can just push it back down and the little spring steel clip will find it's way back from whence it came. You can probably (again) guess what happened next - I can't get it back at all, despite wiggling it around and trying to straighten the spring steel clip as it seems to have a slight curve?
Is there anything I can do to get the headrest back into the seat or do I need to remove the back cover and attack the insides? Apologies for being an idiot but I would be grateful for any replies.

Remove the back cover, I doubt anything is broken

I am only 6ft and have found the headrest stalk is too short and can't be raised to a safe level.
I've got hold of a couple from Tony and plan to cut and shut the stem to give it a couple of extra inches of lift.
This will still leave the main part of the stem as weight bearing, but hopefully it will never be put to the test, the added length will hold the clip that stops it from coming right out.
Remive the seat back ,only 4 screws, slide it back in, job done.
