longer wheel studs for fitment of JBW alloy wheels

    Hi All

During the summer I bought a set of 15" JBW alloy wheels plus set of tyres. They look great on the car but I am concerned about the wheel studs. The nuts supplied with the wheels provide very little engagement onto the studs when compared to the studs used with the original stag alloys. The reason for the difference is that the JBW nuts are chamfered where as the orginal nuts are collared and protrude through the wheels.

For those of you who have fitted JBW wheels how have you overcome this issue? If you fitted longer studs where did you purchase them from?

    Regards

    Bruce

    Hello Bruce,

I had to fit wheel spacers to the rears on mine, to clear the drum casting profile, when I bought my 'genuine' Minilites, and bought longer studs through Demon Tweeks.

Can't say I have really noticed a problem on mine. The nuts don't engage by so many threads, but I think the rule of thumb is that the length of thread engaged needs to be one and a half times the diameter of the thread for maximum strength.
Don't forget the original alloy Stag nuts needed plenty of thread engaged due to their softness, I have no idea what length of thread engagement is needed for alloy nuts.

I did have to replace the studs on my TR when I went from wire wheels to the minilite replicas as they had been shortened for the wires. When I went back to the wires I had to put the short ones back in again.

        ^ +1 with Neil.

Ruler of thumb for nut to stud engagement is 1 1/2 times the stud dia to be engaged with the nut: ie 12 mm outside dia thread requires 18mm of nut engagement to be regarded as safe.

          Hi Chaps.

Thanks for your informative responses. As the car currently has the old alloys back on for the winter I will have to swap one of the JBW wheels back on so as to measure the thread engagement. I don't recall it being very much at all.

Dave, that code does not work on the Demon Tweeks website

Sorry Bruce; my feeble attempt at text shorthand for 'Merry Christmas to you', in the way that young people do. Obviously I'm too old!

Try DT part number GRYSS35. They are 7/16" UNF, but 1" longer than standard.

Happy New Year (in long hand)

              Hi Bruce,

I received a new set of JBW wheels for Christmas from the family and have just had some new boots fitted. Haven't tried them on the car as it is currently sorned until April so no rush and I was going to clean up the edge of the wheel arches first. Hadn't thought about the studs until you mentioned it so I might put one on to see how well the nuts fit. My nearside back wheel came loose once on holiday so I am a bit concerned about there being less stud to tighten up on. I will let you know what I find.

                Hi Roy

Could you please take a photo of the wheel nuts you were supplied with?

                Regards

Hi Bruce, Quick update. I fitted a new wheel yesterday and it looks great. I did a bit of measuring while I was at it and found that the original nuts had 14 turns and the new ones 9 turns which equated to 15mm.
Probably worth changing the studs based on this evidence.

                    Hi Roy

I agree about the fitting of longer studs. Let me know how you get on fitting yours. My car is currently in bits so I won't be in a position to refit the wheels for a good few months.

                    Regards

The time finally arrived this week where I had to sort out the wheel studs on the car before refitting the JBW wheels. For some reason only known to Triumph they fitted shorter studs on the front than they did on the rears. In the photo:-

right hand : original front stud
                      middle : original rear stud
left hand : new 43mm stud from Demon Tweeks as kindly suggested by 022Dave

As you can see from the photo there is a large difference between the original fronts and the new 43mm's so I swapped all eight out. There is negligible difference between the new 43mm's and the original rears so I left them alone.

                      Regards

                      Bruce
