Hi Richard
I am also trying to source seats (mx5 possibly)
If many other seats have been used then people seen reluctant to pass on knowledge.
Shame

hi phil I reckon as long as there narrow and not too wide at the top should be ok
don't know about the bottom rails etc must be same to adapt them
richard
A lot depends on the seat you want to fit,are you going to use the original seat runner or fit the Stag runner to your new seat,i have a pair of Alfa seats i was going to fit,but was to much trouble to fit,im now going to fit Saab seats
I've fitted Recaro seats into mine, aftermarket Recaro seats not Recaro from a scrap car.
It is tricky to do properly.
My seats came with their own low profile runners.
The problem is that the runners even though low profile in my case, are 'on centre' but the mounting points in the car, are 'off centre', with the original Stag seats having 'off centre' runners.
The adaptor brackets I had folded therefore had to pick up the seats, and the mounting points, in different places planes, unlike the original seats.
This took some tricky measuring to ensure the seat is positioned in the correct place, and as low as possible.
I managed to do this, the runner ended up rammed against the tunnel carpet as a result, and the seat actually lower than the original, which for me being tall a bonus.
If done badly, the seat will end up too high, and too close to the door.
I've changed my Recaro seats a couple of times for different ones, but fortunately Recaro tend to use the same mounting holes so now a straight swop for me.

Not really the case Phil. Tell me what did you find when you used the search box to find out what other people had previously posted ? I tried by selecting the Forum and the entered Alternative seats and this is what you find, there are a few references to valve seats because of poorly phrased posts but many references to different model front seats.

Here's a pic of the my Recaros. Think they came from an 80s Escort. Mike kindly sent me a drawing of his brackets but because the runners that came with my seats were Escort not Recaro I couldn't use Mikes design. I made up my own adapter brackets which was easy enough. The Recaros have a taller back than the Stag seats and to be honest I sit higher in them than my original seats but I think this is more to do with the Recaros having new diaphragms. The diaphragms in my old seats were virtually non existent.
Dave they look fantastic re trimmed to match the original.
The runners make a big difference to mounting height, the runners that came with my seats are only something like half inch thick.
I'm sure you will agree, that make a big difference to the driving enjoyment of the car.

My Stag came with SAAB seats and I found that they would not go back far enough for me. I am 6ft tall. They caught on the 'B' post. CM10.jpg

That could be because of the width of the seats, or more probably because the seats have not been positioned correctly being too far apart.
As I said earlier it is tricky to get the seats close to the central tunnel with most seat runners that are 'on-centre' and not 'off-centre' like the original seats.
For reference I have just measured my Recaro seats and they are on a pitch of 640mm centre to centre, and miss the B post by nearly 3", but do have quite a narrow design at the top. They also go back much more than the original seats that are good for me also.
