What is this tube meant to do?

On my Sept 72 Auto Stag there is a black rubber tube 11mm OD which comes up next to the gearbox dip stick/filler tube and curves over the top of the brake servo unit by the bulkhead and down into the off side front wing but this end is not connected to anything - should it be? or is a breather from the 'box. I can't see where the bottom end goes to.
Any advice appreciated.

It's a breather pipe from the transmission sump, make sure it's not blocked or restricted as it can cause oil leaks.

It it supposed to be connected, it's the gearbox breather, have fun trying to reconnect it, it couldn't be in a more awkward place. 154775 in the drawing.
