    Motor insurance rip off

Being an insurance broker I’ve a fair idea of how the markets work but I have still not got to understand how motor insurers get away with the practices many of them are involved in now...

Today I got my motor renewal quote from Admiral, a multi car policy on which we have two cars our RR Sport and Daughters Audi A1; Last years total premium £3,578 this years (no claims or changes at all) £5,700 Yes, that’s correct!
So, slightly incensed I had a go at the meerkat sight where I got the original Admiral terms from and surprise surprise doing two different quotes for each car separately I got £740 for the Audi and £519 for the Range Rover.
Admittedly the Audi will now need a box which it doesn’t currently but the premium attributable to the RR alone with Admiral is £2,300!
What a load of con artists!

Its no wonder when you see stuff like this insurance gets such poor press - abissmal

Not strictly a reply to Mike but what is the score with the Lancaster people. I have now been told by two people that they can insure their Stag with them, fully comp, for £80. That's seems to be so far below the market that there must be a catch. Does anyone know what it is ?

Can’t help Peter, but Mike, I will support your comments. The wife insured her Juke with Admiral 18 months ago.

Completed the online application and accepted the premium, paid for it etc. Problem was that we genuinely thought that an accident she had with her previous Mini, was then over 5 years prior and did not need to be declared. About 2 weeks afterwards Admiral wrote to her stating that the accident hadn’t been declared. ( It was 4 years and 11 months not 5 years) .

They advised that the one accident didn’t affect the premium, but that they would need to re-issue the policy paperwork and that it would cost us £35:00. Paid up, but if they knew the accident was there, why didn’t they ask beforehand?

Suffice to say, at last renewal, it went up over £100, we changed back to Direct Line, once bitten........

My recent quote with Lancaster was more than twice that amount Peter. Eventually settled on a very good deal through the Club scheme, my preference being to support the Club where possible (it was a win win, they were v competitive too).

What I didnt like with Lancaster was the sales guys attempt to get me to sign up with is hackneyed old "what can i do to get your business now?" approach. I told him i wanted to compare as he was the first I spoke to but still he kept at it, "what if I can get you a lower price?" to which I replied I would have thought you would give me your best price at the first quote" I got some horlicks about managers having access to a better scale of rates - not impressed.

Dealing with RH on the other hand was a pleasure.

They're all at it Ian, trying to get the most out of you they can - remember the farce of accident management schemes? Who was that down to? Insurance companies selling your details on to the accident management companies they owned to get more out of the claims. Snakes the lot of them (except Mike obviously). On youir specific question, I dont think they check the MID until you have signed up, that;'s when the discrepancy (small as it was) would have become clear.

I insured my Stag with RH, SOC recommended broker, when we agreed the premium he asked if I had other cars in daily use which we have, could they quote us at renewal time, yes please.

Rang them and they said they would beat my current renewal by at least 10%, it took a week with bit of to and fro-ing but they did what the said and actually saved me £100 on a £650 premium.

They also included European cover and Breakdown Cover which saved another £85 as I did not renew theRAC cover on the wires car, so very happy with them.

Got to say I haven’t tried the club scheme for the RR but I know they won’t take on my daughter with her Audi having asked before.
I did have the cancellation conversation with Admiral today though and they tried to convince me that they could reduce the premium on each car to £2,000 and felt they were being fair! I pointed out that an overall £1,400 was someway off £4,000 plus my daughter is quite happy to have a box to save herself £1,250!

                  Multi car = multi con!

I dropped RH because of having to jump through hoops to get a guaranteed value. Had to go through the club, pay to get a value blah blah. In the end I tried Peter Best, same cover including Euro breakdown, just had to send in 6 photos and bish bosh guaranteed value. Didn't have to send photos for this years rental as they honoured it.

funny old thing mike but i had a course late last year to help me obey the speed limits better than points ! the guy who gave the presentation was asked a few questions one of which was do you need to declare to your ins company that you have been on a course Answer only if they ask specificaly and then any company who raises the premium because of that should be frowned on ..he said just walk and insure with another there are plenty ! but he aslo stated they were only ever aware of one company raisng premiums if youve been on a course he didnt name out right but a series of clues about a one eyed naval officer with a parrot was the answer

dick turpin and mask come to mind

Today i sorted my renewal on the 335 x4d. Last year with Hastings Direct it cost £330 but its a bit quick and i managed to colect an sp30 and 100 quid fine in August so Hastings wanted £640! Anyway 20 minutes later on Compare the Market switched to Saga for £310 ! its a buyer beware get your quotes and never be loyal to them situation, they will have it away everytime if you let them. Stags with Lancaster 5th year now always pay £110 ish never a problem.

I would also recommend RH. Always used them for my Stag. Again offered 10% off for other vehicles. I asked them just to match when I renewed my golf, they included breakdown for less than the renewal price. I also have my Caterham added on to the stag policy, so a multi car policy. Will certainly be trying them when my others come up for renewal. Tim

I know someone with an Admiral multicar policy who has just had the renewal premium rocket. Unfortunately it had auto-renewed at a 50% increase!

My Stag is with Peter James and the renewal in November had dropped by £70 to just over $100 inc. breakdown cover. It makes me wonder if there is a bit of a price war going on for classic car insurers!

I think the auto renewal is where they seek to rip you off. My Honda auto renewed a week before lucky for me I changed the card and it failed I then saved £100 going elsewhere.
My v5 t5 insurance I choose a cheap quote and soon regretted the company. They wanted every driver's licence number they also wanted pictures of all licences and they wanted codes you can get from the DVLA allowing time limited access to your information. It was like emigration
I always compare now and have saved thousands.
We once phone up Tesco who gave a quote of 4 grand over the phone then went online and Tesco came up with the cheapest quote of just over a grand. He said it's best you go online.
