    Steering wheel refurbish

Has anyone had their steering wheel re-plated and re-covered?

I'm thinking of this and wondered if it was successful and is there a company out there that does that sort of thing.
Yes most likely cheaper & quicker to buy a new, but different wheel, but I wanted to keep the original wheel.

I think the middle of the steering wheel is made of alli and will clean up okay

Yes.. I agree with Dave, sure the spindles are alli so maybe some fine wet n dry or metal polishing cream (Autosol). I replaced my larger Mk1 steering wheel with the smaller diameter Mk2. I still have the original Mk1 but the leather is now rotting so keen to see if anyone comes up with a trimmer that can do this. The Mk2 is more of a shiny plastic finish and a thicker grip than the MK1 so not sure if or how this can be refurbed. Keen to follow this thread.

Got a new Mk2 from Rimmers at the SOC weekend ~2.5 years ago, but in the end went for a MotaLita with thicker rim, so is now surplus. PM me if interested.

Not too sure about that Dave, as the couple of wheels I have have rust spots on the spokes. I wouldn't be surprised if it were some exotic plating on steel, as I can't explain the red rust otherwise.

Try a magnet on the spokes - it won’t stick if they’re aluminium.

Done! The magnet was VERY attracted to the spokes - flew out of my fingers to get there! So I'd think carefully about wet-or-drying them !

I can confirm that if you are too energetic with the polish, you will go through the ali finish! Ask me how I know.....

On the new series of wheeler dealer with Ant Antead episode 2 i think it was they are doing a toyota celica and Mikes having the leather steering wheel recovered. Looked a nice job but its a guy in America so we could do with finding someone more local.

Copy of my post in another thread - hope it helps

There’s a guy called Jack at Royal Steering Wheels who does some lovely work on more modern Cars M3s for example. No reason he couldn’t do a similar job on any wheel, I expect Aldridge would sub that kind of specialist work

I always thought they were anodised Ali, but mine has a couple of tiny rust spots, always thought it was contamination, but you live and learn eh!

I stand corrected ...looks like I won't be using wet n dry then! I've never done the magnet test but the flat silver-grey always assumed raw alli . Not looked at the old one in years ,its simply hanging off the garage rafters along with my Mk1 Wheel trims.
