Petition to Exempt Historic Vehicles from Scrappage Scheme

    Lifted from the TRR forum:

There is Parliamentary Petition calling for historic vehicles to be exempt from a potential new scrappage scheme.

It would appear that many historic vehicles, including over 80 Morris Minors, were lost last time. Whilst many of our cars may not be at risk there may be some others that are.

The link to the petition is:

Make it illegal for manufacturers to process vehicles which have Historic Vehicle on their V5 documents though any scrappage scheme. A simple way to avoid losing rare road heritage is to make all vehicles with Historic Vehicle on their V5 document, legally exempt from scrappage.

Once the form has been filled in on line, which only takes a couple minutes, the signatory will receive an email and must click the link in the email. He/she will then be acknowledged as having signed. There are currently about 5,600 signatures, which considering the size of classic car ownership is a bit low. This maybe because classic vehicle owners are not aware of this petition.

If you feel it appropriate, please sign. The petition closes in June.

      Try this https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/207027

Don't know why it didn't work - perhaps copying it from another post was the problem? Anyway I've recopied and pasted in the op too, hopefully OK now.

Just Googled it and this is what I found

Make it illegal for manufacturers to process vehicles which have Historic Vehicle on their V5 documents though any scrappage scheme. A simple way to avoid losing rare road heritage is to make all vehicles with Historic Vehicle on their V5 document, legally exempt from scrappage.

This is a earlier petition that was rejected

British motoring heritage is under threat from both government and manufacturer backed scrappage schemes. We believe a simple way to avoid losing rare classic cars, particularly examples of family cars from the 1950s, 60s and 70s is to make all Historic Vehicles exempt from any scrappage process.

Sorry Rod, forgot to add the link to the earlier petition which was rejected, added it now for info.

I have already "signed" the latest one you brought to our attention.

            Thanks

Ah, the reason for rejection of the previous one is interesting. I wonder if this new one will go the same way then as I don't think there is a Government backed scrappage scheme at present.

If it is not a government scheme then it is a manufacturers/dealers scheme to boost new car sales. Depending on terms and conditions of the purchase of the "scrap" car from the customer quite probably there is no "legal" obligation to actually scrap the cars.

If the government are subsidising the scheme with the intention of removing certain age/types of vehicle off the road the onus is on the purchasing dealer to ensure the vehicle is correctly scrapped by obtaining a certificate from appointed breakers confirming the vehicle has been scrapped. Failure to obtain a certificate will result in the dealers being unable to claim the subsidy via their manufacturer.

I have been told by people I know in the trade that on the first scheme certain classic vehicles were "scrapped", but appeared without any identification numbers, all chassis, engine numbers were eradicated and the vehicles used for spares.
