    Balance weights on alloy wheels

Hi everyone just a quick question, my balance weights are on the outside of the wheels and they ruin the look of the alloys, is it possible to have the weights on the inside where they won't be seen. Many thanks in advance Steve.

Yes the static and dynamic weights can be stuck to the inside of the rim.

When I last used alloys (Triumph 2500 ‘S’) the weights were inside and out depending on where the balancing machine instructed them to go.

Balancing machines are a bit more clever now, no need for weights on outside of rim

Thats very true, but sometimes the operators cant be bothered and put them on the easiest place for them, make sure you tell them you do not want them visible.

Part of the reason they can' be bothered is that the inside of the wheel rim is often very dirty and sometimes oily. The weights are self adhesive and if you don't want them to fall off you have to spend a few minutes giving the area good clean and wipe down with a degreaser, so they will opt for sticking them on the outside where it is cleaner if they can get away with it. It can also require a bit more effort as the weights are further inboard and the exact position is less well defined (across the width) by the balancer. The balancers I have used have a few different programs but they only give a crude position for the weights in terms of distance in from the rim. It gets even harder on the alloys with "spokes" that let you see right through the wheel. You can "hide" the weights behind the spokes but sods law says that the balancer will tell you to put them in the gap where they can be seen. You end up with a bit of trial and error to split the weights between adjacent spokes. I had that hassle when I balanced the wheels on SWMBO's MX5.

Just be careful if they put too many weights on for a badly balanced wheel that they foul the rear drum and had to be put on the front of the car instead as there is more clearance with the discs.

A good fitter would gladly clean the inside of the wheel, after all that's his job.

If they are decent tyres they shouldn't need too much in they way of weights, especially if the fitter takes time to put the tyre on in the right position, most if not all tyres are marked to indicate which point should go next to the tyre valve or heavy point of the wheel. In my experience not many do.

As you say Jeff a good fitter should get it right, it is their job. Trouble is like all things not everyone is as conscientious as they should be, and not every one who has tyres fitted knows what is right and wrong.
