    Boot alignment MK2

On my newly acquired MK2 Stag (1975) my boot fits perfect at the hinge edge and at the front chromed edge, but is raised along the sides above the rear wing edges? Given the fit front and back I can't imagine any adjustment is going to work so I wondered as Rimmers list different Boots for MK1 and MK2 whether I might have a MK1 boot fitted?

Thanks for any advice or help.

As far as I know, the only difference between MK1 and Mk2 is that the Mk2 has numberplate lights in the lid rather than on the bumber. The shape of the lit itself is exactly the same.

No, all boot lids are the same. Mine bulges in area similiar to yours but the rear edge is slightly high. One reason may be someone has replaced the rubber boot seal. For years you could not get the correct shape of seal and the replacement, like mine, is too thick. It des not compress enough and leave the sides raised.

You could test this my removing the seal closing the boot and lining up the rear corners and see if the sides are still raised.

Thanks John and Alan for the replies - I'll try the boot seal idea and see what happens.

When I say "exactly the same", I mean within the tolerences British Leyland's exacting stamdards would allow (!*?%@)

            Mark,

What you have is a repro boot lid and the curvature of the lid is not the same as the rear wings. C'est la vie with repros. No amount of rubber seal fittings is going to make any difference.

I have two just the same.

There is only one repro boot lid, whether you want Mk1 or Mk2.

When my car was at Faversham Classics earlier this year I had an interesting conversation with Trevor there about the differences between bootlids on the early versus late Stags since there is only one pattern now available. Trevor said that what a lot of people don't realise is that the curvature is different and as a rule he 'persuades' the repro version to curve using a piece of wood .I had visions of him bashing it with a baseball bat but he meant gently pressing it in certain ways to acheive the correct shape.

It may be worth giving him a ring - he is always happy to talk on the phone.

                Ray,

That makes a lot of sense, as last night I removed the rubber seal and the boot even without a seal won't curve correct, at least now I understand why this is.

                Thanks
