    A type overdrive

Hello to everyone,I wonder if anyone can help with a problem i have with my overdrive. It works alright when i set off from cold but it seems that when it gets warmed up it dosentengage into overdrive and when slowing down, the revs drop and suddenly the revs roar up on there own. Ihave on the last couple of trips out ,not bothered withthe overdrive but is started to cost me a fortune in fuel.

I can hear the click noise when i engage o/d in 3 and 4 without the engine running,so i think the wiring is ok,but i havnt a clue other than this.

Any help would be very handy.

    Thanks

    Nibby,

Have youdefinitely eliminated electrics? The wires from the gearknob switch have a tendancy to break due to the constant movement of the gearlever. Changes in temperature can cause these to open and give the symptoms you describe.

I have also found that the operating valve (500658) can get blocked with sludge, which in my case also gave the same symptoms. This is accessed by removing the rubber bung under the centre console 'coin tray'. You will see a hexagonal plug (268095) on the top r/h side of the o/drive. Remove this and carefully extract the spring, plunger, ball-bearing andvalve with long-nosed pliers. Clean the valve out by blowing through it. Replace everything. If you find it blocked, I would drain and refill the g/box. There is also a filter (516010)beneath the brass plug (513904) on the bottom of the o/drive. Worth cleaning this at the same time.

I dont know if the A'type has the same opperating solenoid valve as the J'type, but on mine the overdrive didnt work properly because the valve was stuck. It isnt much to remove and strip, give a quick clean to the valve itself and replace. While it is appart you could replace the O'rings to ensure a proper flow of oil.

      Good luck.

Thanks for your help, I am going to replace the switch on top of the gear lever and wiring and clean the solenoid, filter and valve today. I let you know how I get on.
