    bonnet insulation pad

    Hi guys

Has any one tried to clean up their bonnet insulation pad, I have removed mine while I tidy up the bar and plates that holds it in, the pad is in good condition and I wondered about cleaning it with a water based engine cleaner and then giving a light blow over with some matt black paint. has anyone tried this or is cleaning the pad a no no.

    Cheers

    Hi Mick

I have painted mine with tyre-wall black, it seals the pad and puts a skin on it, comes up a treat.

Are the bar and plates that hold the bonnet insulation pad in place supposed to be painted black or chromed?

The ones on my resto are simply rusty:?

      Cheers

Bruce, they came out of the factory body colour but many have changed to the chrome look.

The easiest fix for the bonnet pad is to spray it liberally with tyre foam, ifthe resultisn't good enough, try the paint. I would be disinclined to wash it as it's quite absorbent and might disintegrate.

The retaining bar is black, but the plates are body colour, on some colours the polished stainless ones look good. Martin.

The plateswere body coloured under the rust and black paint previously applied, this would back up Ians thoughts, not sure about the bar though.I am having mine powder coated satin black.

Bob, thanks for tip, I will try it out.

            Cheers

              Hi Mick

Before Iboght my new one, i cleaned mine up with Jizer as its water based, letf itto dry and then did what Bob did and coated it with a black layer and it looked good.

The plates should be body colour and the bar black

              Cheers

The original one on my first Stag was a bit powdery/flakey. I took it off and sprayed it with a weak solution of PVA adhesive using a garden spray. Sealed it up nicely. Never thought about giving it a coat of tyre paint afterwards.

I eventually bought a new SOCTFL one and chucked the old one out.

If anyone wants ausable original one, I have the one taken from my current Stag when I fitted a SOCTFL pad.
