Cigarette Lighter - wiring

I was having another root around in the rats nest of wiring behind the console of my car, the cigarette lighter didn't work, nor did it illuminate or provide power. The wire to the bulb fell apart when I touched it, the earth wire to the lighter seems fine but there was no supply to the lighter itself. There is a "pin" that sticks out of the back of the lighter and I have found a purple wire that has a very small connector that looks like it might fit on here, is this correct?

Hi Ian

Purple is the correct live for the ligther and black earth. illumination should have Red & white wire and Black earth.

Stuart, I have the illumination wire & there is a black earth to the lighter body, there is a purple wire that looks like it might fit on the "pin" is this right or are you saying there should be two black earth wires?

I've taken the lighter out now, the manual begins to make sense, the threaded portion has become detached from the rest of the external section. I'm going to try to solder it back on, I don't need a cigarette lighter but I do want a power source so I'll give it a try.
