What is the best paint to use for the rear subframe, rear drum brakes and back plate?

    Hi Stuart

I have restored an Austin Atlantic,Austin a105,Triumph Stag and am now restoring another Stag. On all of these cars I have used POR15 semi gloss. Por15 ,unless it is top coated ,is not tolerant of UV light . Its expensive and I am not sure if it is available in Great Britain but it is my first choice for the components that you mentioned,I have even used it on a stag engine block.

As dave says it is good stuff and a friend of mine swears by it,i'm currenty re bushing my front end and will be repainting my suspension parts with it.

Does POR15 stand up to all weather motoring as I do not want to do the job again in a hurry and I use my car in all weathers?

          Stu

          It says on the tin

"POR-15 is a rust preventive coating designed for application directly on to rusted or seasoned metal surfaces. it dries to a rock hard, no porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel, and it prevents rust from recurring by protecting metal from further expose to moisture"

It is a bit on the expensive side but the best products normally are

            Thanks Stuart

I read that but being a sales man I don't beleive hype! But I do beleive personal referances

            I'll get some ordered up.

              Hi Stuart,

I did my subframe in Hammerite Spray paint with a couple of coats of zinc rich primer first. The Brake drum and back plate I used Halfords very high temperature paint, although it has to be heated to cure properly. I used a suitable kitchen appliance for the job:shock::shock::shock:. It has a matt finish though which wasn't really what I wanted. Time will tell if it works!

                  Stuart

I applied two coats of Rustbuster anti rust paint, followed by two coats of zinc rich primer followed by two coats of black enamel. This combination was recommended by a fellow stag enthusiast in the Derby area whose cars still looks mint six years after he restored it. I agree with your philosophy of going with personnel recommendations.

                  Regards

                  Bruce

I got all my suspension components and brake back platespowder coated in chassis black. The drums I painted in hammerite black. I haven't noticed any degredation of the finish on the drums and I drive my car fairly hard. The powder coated parts are easy to keep clean.

                    regards,

                    Raoul
