I'm trying to fit some polly bushes in to my bottom arms, been trying with a vice and having no joy has anyone got any good tips or ideas for fitting these bushes?
When I did mine I took them to my local garage/MOT station and for a very small fee they kindly pressed out the old ones and pressed in the new ones for me on a hydraulic press. Judging by the amount of pressure needed to do this I think trying to do it successfully at home would be extremely difficult.
I used a press because I have got one - people tell me that you can fit poly in a vice but I doubt you would be able to fit the standard ones in a vice. You need to use the lube they provide and as long as you can keep it square a large vice would do I would have thought .
Can you remove the s/s sleeve from the poly bush first? The ones I fitted years ago were a doddle. Unlike rubber ones, the sleeve wasn't bonded to the bush. With the sleeve out, the poly went in easily (with a bit of lube - ooer, Matron!) and then the sleeve went in afterwards.

Sorted in the end, my vice is a bit on thesmall side, but with using 2 pieces of wood and an extra pair of hands to keep the arm square in the vice they slid in quite easily.
But i will defiantly need a bigger vice or press for the bottom ball joints
I used a bit of threaded bar to do mine. M10 from B&Q and a few nuts. The washers are from the subframe mounts and you need something tubular to leave a gap for the flange of the bush. In my case a 46mm ring spanner!!!! Just wind the nuts in to squish it all in!
Getting the old ones out is virtually the same, except I used two spanners! Not really ideal but that is all I had to hand. A couple of inches of scaffold tube would probably be better. I also drilled through the rubber to make it a bit more pliable and easier to remove.
My old bushes just pushed out by hand, i dont think my leaking power steering pipes and rack helped the bushes much
Funny how one job leads to another, i started off with just a service and fitting new power steering pipes, which then leadto a newrack and a suspension rebuildto sort out all my unwanted play in the steering, 2 months later and just about ready to rebuild.
Have you repainted the rear arms or did they justclean up well?
