    2.5 Gearbox Overdrive Inhibit Switch.

    Hello.

I have done a search and there are a number of descriptions but would anyone have a picture of where the overdrive inhibit switch is on a 1974 2.5 P.I. Gearbox. Reason for asking is the overdrive operates in all four gears and I am worried that I may leave the overdrive switched on when reversing. I have a Haynes manual and the big ( dark blue ) workshop manual for the 2.5 but I cannot find much information about the overdrive inhibit switch. This engine and gearbox is fitted to a Stag and I am assuming that gearbox is also from the 2.5 P.I as where the gearlever comes into the car through the transmission tunnel seems to have been modified in this area. I know I could put the car up on ramps etc but I am able to use a car lift in a garage and would like to know what and where I am looking as I can only use this lift for short periods of time. I am hoping that the switch is on the side of the gearbox as if it is on the top how could I get to it without removing the gearbox. Not many more weeks and I will have sorted all the little niggles on my Stag and it will be my daily driver. The Stag has reminded me what am old fart I am, brain cell still thinks I am 21, following morning after doing stuff on the Car I feel like a lizard, need to lie on the rocks in the sunshine for an hour to loosen stiff joints.

    Many thanks, Don Kennedy

    Hi Don

The switches are on the top and for the overdrive, there should just be the one. which is directly below the wooden trim known as the 'coin' tray which is the flat panel in front of the gear stick section. There is a large rubber grommet that you could pull up to access it. You will only be Abe to reach the wiring and finger touch the switch. that's where it is.

The problem is that this switch is letting current through continuously to the solenoid. This is either that the switch has stuck in the on position or that there was a problem with the switch and someone has just joined the wired and bypassed the switch. The later is my guess.

If I remember correctly the switchis on the left hand side of the box and can be got to through the inspection hole on the passenger side transmission tunnel under the carpet.

I might be the soleniod is stuck open have you got a J type or A type OD box?

Or the relay is faulty or the wiring from the gearlever to the soleniod?

Good point as to the location depending on which box. Mine is a J type as its at the very top to the right and maybe the A tyre is lower downto the left

Many thanks for your time replying.

I will have a closer look and see if I can locate the switch. I have had a quick look from underneath and cannot see any switch on the side of the gearbox so must be the type that is at the top. I suspect that the previous owner has not connected the inhibit switch and has just connected the wires together. It sounds like the switch is a real bugger to get to and if there are any problems I will connect a normally closed contact relay in the overdrive feed and have it operated by the reverse light circuit. i.e. when reverse is selected it activates the relay and disconnects the feed to the overdrive solenoid.

I think it could be easier to connect a relay than try to get to the inhibit switch.

Once again, Many thanks, Don Kennedy

            Hi Don,

I have seen them on a bracket at the base of the gearlever. This is how it was on the A-type gearbox originally in my Mk1. When I had to change the 'box for a good s/hand one, the inhibitor switch was screwed into the top of the gearlever extention housing/top cover. That one was a right pig to get at with the 'box fitted. Careful yu don't confuse the o/drive inhibitor switch with the reverse light switch. They are identical.

Yourrelay solution sounds like an alternative solution.

              Hi Dave,

I have had a look at the base of the gearlever ( removed coin tray etc ) and cannot see anything, did notice the large grommet thing that others have mentioned and will have another look at the weekend. As advised if this is going to be one of those jobs that is a real bugger I will fit a relay, easy to do and will not take more than an hour.

Not long now and the Stag will be flying the flag every dayon the roads of south westDevon and south east Cornwall.
