    valve shims

Just a quick note. I've just measured all my carefully segregated valve shims prior to rebuilding the cylinder heads.

One shimhas a recess on one side, roughly the same diameter as a valve stem. Can I assume that something has gone awry here?

    Hi John

This is where the valve stem has been wearing the shim. I would just replace it the other way up when refitting

I had thought of doing that although I would expect the consensus would be to replace the worn shim with new. My query is, though, the other 15 show no sign of wear?

This shim must have been from a different batch which were not hardened properly.

H'mmm! Possible, if not probable. Chances are that after re-seating the valves I will need to replace certain shims anyway, I'll just have to make sure that one is left out of the equation when shuffling the existing shims first.

          Thanks
