Strange Crystals

Today while working on a Dolly SprintI looked in the engine bay and could not believe what I saw. On closer inspection some white crystals had formed around a fuel hose near the pump; they looked like frost on a tree branch. The hose had partially disintegrated and fuel was leaking out.NB: It was not there yesterday.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

was it cold enough to be ice from the cooling of the evoporating fuel?

I've seen this happen several times on more than one vehicle (usually motorbikes)

It can happen even on quite warm days, evaporating fuel can cause ice to form, that's more or less how a 'fridge works.
