    Good value on Halogen headlamps

Anyone who is still using sealed beam headlamps might want to be aware of the bargain I just got:

4 brand new 5 3/4" halogen headlamp units (all dip/main units with dogleg dip pattern), complete with H4 bulbs, and also fitted with sidelamp bulbs and holders for £46.93 delivered.........

Company is called Bolt On Bits, in Cleckheaton 01274 869955

Thanks Russ, i'm thinking of fitting Xenon lights for dip beam, wired through relays to reduce the current through the switch and Halogen for main beam. I'll give them a call, see whats on offer!

          Brian,

I think you will find that Halogen was original. The Stag lights are unusual in that they are all fitted with H1 single filament bulbs, The outers are shielded to provide a dip beam and the inners are plain to provide a main beam. Hitting the Main Beam switch just turns the inners on. The outers stay lit.

Sealed beam lights have been available, but are of inferior light output and are scrap if one filament goes and it may be difficult to get a matching replacement now.

The original units are hard to get these days, so many have fitted new units with H4 dual filament bulbs. To retain the original features, just wire the dip filament of the outer lights and the main filament of the inners. That does then give you four spare bulbs. If the filament in use goes, just swap the bulb with the adjacent lamp.

It is possible (and legal) to wire all the filaments up so that you have 4 dipped lights and 4 main beam lights, but I reckon anyone who does will get more than enough flashes from approaching motorists.

Russ seems to have found a supplier with very cheap light units. If he wires up all the sidelight bulbs as well he has the potential for 6 'sidelights'.

            Hi Jason and Dave

I didn't really think of 70s cars having halogen lights but I'm glad mine are original as my car is quite 'unmolested' you might say! However, if one of the sealed beam units fails then I'll certainly replace them with halogens and maybe swap all four for the H4 type that Russ has bought. Even on sealed beam units the Stag has good lights though.

Thanks for the info, especially about the connections.

Here's the pic from his advert - it's true to life, and reflects what you get for your money.

They don't have Halogen etched on the glass.

By the way, he sells them as pairs for £18.99, but the postage remains the same even if you buy 4 or 5 pairs

I bought a set of Cibies for about £130 including bulbs and fittings so these are a bargain, but I prefer convex lenses on a Stag, these cheaper ones looklike they have flat lenses. The Cibies, with standard bulbs are incredible, I actually enjoy night driving now, the range is excellent.

No these lenses are convex.....slightly less than a standard unit, but look far more like the original than the Cibies

That's where I originally found them Darren - it's just if you are ordering more than one set, according to the bloke at Bolt On Bits, ebay's billing page can't cope with the discount on postage.....

This is why I decided to publish the guy's contact details, as when I phoned him, he was really very helpful...... makes a nice change....
